The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is at a critical juncture. On December 23, 2018, the DRC has a historic opportunity to carry out a credible election leading to a peaceful, democratic transfer of power.
The stakes are high. Credible and transparent elections will help alleviate the DRC’s humanitarian and development challenges, improve the country’s ability to attract investment, and reinforce stability across the DRC and the region. The United States has a deep and longstanding bilateral relationship with the DRC. Successful elections on December 23 that are in accordance with the DRC constitution and accepted by the Congolese people will help us embark on a positive new chapter in our engagements for the benefit of the Congolese and American people.
As the election campaigns begin on November 23, we encourage all actors to remain engaged in the process, conduct their activities in a peaceful manner, and commit to respecting human rights, fundamental freedoms, and democratic values. The world is watching as the Congolese people exercise their right to vote and determine their country’s future.
