Vientiane Residents Give Alms to Mark Makhabousa Festival

Vientiane Mayor Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune and other officials joined thousands of Lao and Thai Buddhist devotees to give alms to 1,500 monks at That Luang Square on the morning of Feb 11 in Vientiane Capital to mark Makhabousa Day.

Donations, including 430 million kip and 101 baht of gold by Thai Buddhist devotees (1.889 baht = 1 ounce), were also announced at Saturday’s alms giving event to support the ongoing renovation of That Luang.

The alms giving event was organized by the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Organisation in cooperation with Lao Front for National Construction.

Makhabousa day is celebrated on the full moon day of Makha in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Sri Lanka and on the full moon day of Tabodwe in Myanmar to commemorate the teachings of Lord Buddha.

The spiritual aims of the day are not to commit any kind of sin; do only good; and to purify one’s mind. Makhabousa is an occasion when Buddhists tend to go to the temple to perform merit-making activities.
