Guangzhou: The fifth Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Culture and Arts Festival commenced at the Guangzhou Opera House on the evening of September 16. The festival is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), and the Government of the Macao SAR.
According to Lao News Agency, the month-long festival features a broad spectrum of events across 11 cities, categorized into five main themes: ‘Arts in the Bay’ performance series, ‘Resonance in Arts’ art lectures, ‘Shared Aesthetics’ art exhibitions, ‘Art in Daily Life’ community activities, and the ‘Radiance of Arts’ performing arts fair. The festival will host over 100 performances, 19 exhibitions, and more than 150 community-oriented events.
The festival opened with the ‘Symphony of the Greater Bay Area’ concert, showcasing seven compositions that embody the ‘GBA gene’, featuring Guangdong’s most notable original symphonic works from recent years. The event is set to stage several world-renowned classic works, with international troupes choosing this festival as their debut platform in China, offering local audiences a chance to experience world-class art locally.
Among the notable performances was ‘La Traviata,’ performed by a 150-member troupe from the Greek National Opera, marking their debut in China. Additionally, Matthew Bourne’s ‘Swan Lake,’ known for its all-male ensemble, reimagines the classic story and is recognized as a milestone in modern ballet.
The festival also featured performances of ‘Eugene Onegin’ and ‘Uncle Vanya’ by the Vakhtangov Theatre of Russia, celebrated for their portrayal of Russian literary classics. A special musical theatre performance included five internationally acclaimed stars, such as Brad Little, who performed 26 classic musical pieces on the GBA stage.
Upcoming highlights include the French musical ‘Moli¨re’ set to perform in October at the Guangzhou Opera House, exploring the life of Moli¨re with innovative stage aesthetics. The dance drama ‘Confucius’ by the China National Opera and Dance Drama Theater has already been staged, with the National Theatre of China and the Shanghai Yue Opera House set to follow with ‘The Yellow Storm’ and ‘A Dream of Red Mansions,’ respectively.
The Guangdong Yue Opera Theatre’s production ‘Samsui Women’ presents a compelling tale of female strength, while the Southern Song and Dance Troupe’s ‘I Like You’ merges traditional Yingge Dance with modern musical theatre.
To further energize the performing arts market in the GBA and promote high-quality growth in Guangdong’s performing arts market, this year’s festival includes the ‘Radiance of Arts’ component-the 16th China (Guangzhou) International Performing Arts Fair. Scheduled from September 25 to 28, the fair will gather nearly 300 performing arts institutions from 20 countries and regions, presenting close to 1,000 productions.
