UNFPA and Australian Government Provide Vital Support to Flood-Affected Women and Girls in Lao PDR.

(kpl): The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has delivered dignity kits worth US$20,200 to the Lao Women’s Union (LWU) to aid flood-affected regions in Luang Prabang, Xayaboury, and Luang Namtha provinces. This crucial initiative is backed by the Australian Government.

According to Lao News Agency, this year’s severe flooding has impacted several northern provinces, including Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Xayaboury, Luang Prabang, Huaphan, and Vientiane. In response, UNFPA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, previously distributed 200 dignity kits to women and girls in the affected areas. Today’s handover complements these efforts, addressing the growing needs of women and girls.

Field assessments by a national disaster response team, comprising government ministries, NGOs, and UN agencies, have identified urgent needs such as clothing, portable lights, hygiene supplies, sanitary pads, and information on services to mitigate gender-based violence risks. The handover of these essential items marks a s
ignificant milestone in addressing immediate and long-term responses to gender-based violence in humanitarian situations.

In the aftermath of floods and other emergencies, UNFPA’s dignity kits provide vital support to women and girls. These kits include crucial supplies often overlooked amidst urgent needs for safety, food, and water. They empower individuals to feel safe and uphold their dignity during challenging times, enhancing mobility, fostering self-esteem, and promoting social participation.

Ms. Aly Vongnobountham, President of the Lao Women’s Union, stated that the dignity kits are essential in supporting women and girls affected by the floods, providing vital hygiene products, clean clothing, and safety items. Dr. Bakhtiyor Kadyrov, UNFPA Representative, emphasized the kits’ design to meet the needs of various target groups, facilitating access to essential health and mental health services.

Ms. Megan Jones, Australia’s Ambassador to the Lao PDR, highlighted Australia’s commitment to supporting i
nitiatives that promote empowerment and resilience, focusing on sustainable development and enhancing community resilience.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of UNFPA, the Lao Women’s Union, and Australia to promote the health, safety, and dignity of women and girls in Lao PDR, addressing the root causes of gender-based violence and working towards a future free from violence.
