Australia and Laos Celebrate Milestones in Primary Education Partnership

Vientiane: The Parliamentarians observed lively classrooms where students actively engaged in learning Lao Language, English, Sciences, and Environment classes. Children participated in hands-on science experiments and collaborated enthusiastically on language activities, showing enjoyment and curiosity. The new teaching approach of the revised primary curriculum supported by Australia encourages learning through fun, interaction, and practical application, moving away from rote memorisation. Teachers guided students through activities, with a focus on critical thinking and participation, evidencing the success of the national primary curriculum renewal.

According to Lao News Agency, Mr. Kingmano Phommahaxay expressed that the visit reaffirms the strong partnership between Lao PDR and Australia in advancing quality basic education. Together, they are building an inclusive education system where students actively engage and develop skills needed for the 21st century. He emphasized the vital role of Australia’s support in this transformation and expressed gratitude for their commitment.

Mr. Kingmano Phommahaxay remarked that Australia’s support, through the BEQUAL program, has been crucial in revising the national curriculum, producing quality teaching and learning materials, and establishing a system for continuing professional development for teachers. The program’s second phase focuses on ensuring teachers have ongoing opportunities to upgrade their skills and deliver high-quality education to every child.

Ms. Benita Sommerville highlighted the importance of embracing diversity and inclusivity to ensure every child has access to quality education. She pointed out Australia’s support for initiatives like the Spoken Lao approach, which aids students who do not speak Lao at home in fully participating and thriving in the classroom. This commitment reflects Australia’s belief that all children, regardless of their background, deserve the opportunity to learn and succeed.

The visit concluded with a gift handover ceremony, where the Australian Government presented learning materials including storybooks, sports equipment, and school supplies to the school.

Through sustained partnership and mutual commitment, Australia and the Ministry of Education and Sports of the Lao PDR are working hand-in-hand to ensure equitable access to quality primary education for all children in the Lao PDR, building a brighter future for the nation.
