President Marcos country’s ‘chief salesman’ – lawmakers

MANILA: Lawmakers on Thursday defended President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s travels abroad, saying the Philippine leader is diligently fulfilling his duties to the nation by strengthening diplomatic ties and attracting foreign investments.

In a press conference, Anakalusugan Party-list Rep. Ray Reyes said President Marcos is the country’s ‘chief salesman,’ which is a pivotal role he plays as the Philippine representative on the global stage.

Reyes said Marcos’s foreign trips demonstrate the country’s readiness to engage and coordinate with neighboring nations, extending even to countries as distant as Germany.

‘Our President serves as our chief salesman. He is the face of the country and should demonstrate that we are ready to engage and coordinate with [other] countries,’ Reyes said.

Reyes stressed the need to support the President by ensuring that the country’s infrastructure and legislation align effectively with his representation of the Philippines.

‘We support him to ensure that our product, which i
s the Philippines, is presented in the best possible light,’ he said.

He pointed out the warm receptions received by the Chief Executive during his trips abroad, noting the positive impact of these engagements on enhancing international relations.

‘In all the trips that our beloved President embarks on, there is always a warm reception not only from the Filipino community there but also from their dignitaries and counterpart government officials,’ Reyes said.

House Deputy Majority Leader Janette Garin, for her part, said globalization is the driving force behind such foreign visits, explaining that engagement with other nations is not merely a desire but a pressing necessity in an interconnected world.

‘If you don’t liaise and talk to other countries, if you don’t partner and foster relationship with other countries, mas lalo kang maiiwan (we will be left behind),’ Garin said.

Garin underscored the importance of prioritizing the nation’s welfare above political discourse in reaction to the comment made b
y former President Rodrigo Duterte questioning President Marcos’ foreign trips.

‘I believe maybe it was a joke out of the former President’s mouth or if he was serious maybe it’s a political statement. I think politics should be left behind for the moment,’ Garin said,

Garin urged for a balanced perspective, acknowledging the challenges faced by those in leadership roles and the demanding nature of incumbency, where officials are constantly navigating a multitude of responsibilities.

‘Madali lang kasi magbintang at mahirap na palaging sumasagot ‘yung nakasabak sa trabaho (It’s easy to blame and it’s difficult to always answer when you have responsibilities),” Garin said.

Marcos, currently on a two-country swing in Central Europe, pointed to his compressed schedule consisting of official functions such as meetings with his counterparts and foreign business leaders when asked about allegations that he is just sightseeing or ‘making pasyal’ in his trips abroad.

‘Ito ‘yung schedule ko. San ‘yung pasyal? (Thi
s is my schedule. Where is the sightseeing there?) This is my schedule for today,’ President Marcos told reporters Wednesday concerning his schedule on his trip to Germany.

During his working visit to Germany, Marcos secured at least USD4 billion or PHP220 billion worth of investment deals.

His recent trips to Australia also yielded USD53 billion, or PHP86 billion worth of investments, covering diverse sectors such as renewable energy, clean technology, recycling solutions, housing, IT-BPM infrastructure, medical devices, and digital health services.

President hopes to tap Germany’s Bosch to support PUV modernization

MANILA: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is hoping to get Germany’s automotive supplier Bosch to bring in new technologies in the Philippines that may support the country’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program.

During his two-day working visit in Germany, Marcos met with Vijay Ratnaparkhe, the regional president of Bosch for Southeast Asia and managing director of Bosch Singapore, where he welcomed Bosch’s pivot in Asia’s transportation sector especially as the country transitions to cleaner technologies such as electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

‘Right now, that’s where we are concentrating on because the conversion from petrol to hydrogen is also feasible. We’re supposed to, that’s why we’re still in that you know, you have to attend-we know where we are and we know where we want to be. How you get from A to B,’ Marcos said during the meeting.

‘Actually, our modernization and the costing of the running cost per kilometer of a new modern public utility vehicle and the co
st – the running cost is much lower than the old diesel jeepneys, and taxis, and tricycles that we have. So yes, it is the transition that is always the difficult process,” he stressed.

The PUV modernization program aims to replace the old and dilapidated public utility jeepneys with safer, more comfortable, and eco-friendly vehicles. It also promotes the organization of transport cooperatives as a way to improve the management and operation of public transportation.

The President also welcomed Bosch’s research and development (R and D) initiatives, which he said the German firm will bring to the Philippines to enable the transfer of technology.

‘The R and D has begun already and would be an advantage. We hope that you will bring that technology to the Philippines, transfer the technology to us so we can be-well, you will provide the state-of-the art [technology], you can take advantage of that. But there are, the mobility area is an interesting [one],’ he said.

Bosch is also seeing some potential opportu
nities to participate in the reorganization of the supply chain that is happening in Southeast Asia, with the Philippines setting strategic resources that can contribute to this.

MANILA: Preparations are ongoing for the Love Boracay 2024 Sports Festival scheduled from April 26-30.

The event features eight sports, namely: beach tennis, beach volleyball, beach soccer, football, dragon boat, ultimate frisbee, pickle ball and round net, and non-sport paraw race and sandcastle making.

The festival will be the second tournament to be organized by the Boracay Racquet Sports Club PH team of Maggie Tirol, Theo Dy and Nok Sacapaño after last week’s Boracay Beach Games held in front of Whitehouse Beach Resort.

In the beach tennis competition, Dy and Ivana Caballero won the mixed doubles title over Davis Alabi and Tirol, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.

Keith Palmani and Matt Crisosto bagged the men’s doubles title over CJ Luna and Bryan Magallanes, 6-2, 6-1, while Tirol and Ada Yu were crowned women’s doubles champions after beating Jenny Jara and Anais Silvestre, 6-0, 6-1.

Dy finally had his moment of glory after three runner-up finishes.

“I always made it to finals but always ended up as a runner up. In
God’s will and time, I won. I trained and worked hard to prepare myself for the tournament and I’m happy and proud of the outcome. I’m also thankful to my new partner Ivana who is equally prepared and focused. I look forward to more tournament partnership ahead,” Dy said in an interview on Thursday.

Caballero, a former varsity tennis player who is now working at TJMC Clinic in Boracay, said “First off, I just want to thank God for the opportunity. It has been a pleasure to play and meet different players who share the same passion, which is tennis. For me, I just did my best, leaving it all up to Him above because I want to enjoy this despite the pressure and exhaustion under the sun.’

‘We gave our best and I’m grateful for everyone who supported us all throughout. This victory is not an end, but rather a new beginning for me and my partner in beach tennis and I am looking forward to more opportunities and tournaments like this for me and my fellow tennis enthusiasts,” she said.

Meanwhile, the organizers a
re happy with the outcome of the Boracay Beach Games, saying “everyone was in their A game and it’s truly everyone’s ball game. Creating this kind of event is both meaningful and fulfilling. We see players having fun and while staying focused on the game. This will also not be possible without the support of our LGU (local government unit), Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) and some sponsors.’

“Overall, it was a smooth sailing tournament and we look forward to our next tournament in April, the Love Boracay 2024,” said Dy, a member of the Philta board of trustees and the club’s secretary.

Marcos now in Czech Republic after ‘productive’ Germany visitVietnamese citizens advised not to travel to conflict areas

MANILA: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is now on the second half of his two-country Central Europe visit, arriving in Czech Republic early Thursday after a three-day productive and successful working trip in Germany.

The plane carrying Marcos, First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos and other members of the Philippine delegation landed at Vaclav Havel International Airport in Prague at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday (12:43 a.m. Thursday, Manila time), the Presidential Communications Office said.

While in Prague, Marcos will meet Czech Republic President Petr Pavel and three other constitutional heads, which include Prime Minister Petr Fiala, and the heads of the Czech Parliament — Senate President Miloš Vystrcil and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Markéta Pekarová Adamová.

A Joint Communiqué on the establishment of labor consultation mechanisms to ensure the safe and orderly migration of Filipino workers and provide a higher level of protection of their rights and welfare is expected to be signed during Marcos’ v
isit.

The President’s four-day state visit is through the invitation of Pavel, and is in line with the commemoration of the 50th bilateral ties between the Philippines and Czech Republic since its establishment on October 5, 1973.

Productive Germany visit

Before leaving Berlin, President Marcos reported a ‘productive outcome’ of his three-day working visit to Germany, citing its economic and political impact as well as its importance to the country’s regional competitiveness and economic transformation.

The President said. his bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz covered issues concerning both countries, as well as the situation in Ukraine and the German leader’s upcoming visit to Russia and China.

Marcos said he is expecting good results from Scholz visits for securing peace in Eastern Europe and stability in the South China Sea.

The Chief Executive also reported about his fruitful discussions with top officials of German corporations, such as Bosch, Siemens, Airbus, and Lufthansa Techn
ik, who have expressed their intentions to continue investing in the Philippines.

‘It’s encouraging because once again – all of these different entities seemed to be confident in the Philippines economic condition,’ Marcos said, noting some of the German firms are already operating in the Philippines, and would want to expand their operations in the country.

‘And that is manifested by the fact that they are preparing to invest further and whatever. If they have production already, if they have already an operation in the Philippines, they tend to expand. So, we will follow on this and again, try to define government’s role in the transformation process that we went through,’ he added.
