Pfizer: COVID-19 Pill Cuts Risk of Severe Disease by 89%

U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced Friday its new COVID-19 pill showed an 89% reduction in risk of COVID-19-related hospitalization or death in clinical trials and they plan to submit the drug to U.S. regulators for emergency use approval.

In a release Friday, Pfizer said the latest clinical trials of its pill, Paxlovid, featured a randomized, double-blind study of non-hospitalized adult patients with COVID-19 who are at high risk of progressing to severe illness.

The company said interim analysis of the oral antiviral showed an 89% reduction in risk compared to a placebo in patients treated within three days of symptom onset.

Pfizer said it has received an independent data monitoring committee recommendation to pause enrollment in the Phase 3 trial due to the overwhelming efficacy demonstrated in the latest results.

The company plans to submit the data as part of its ongoing application to the FDA for Emergency Use Authorization as soon as possible.

Pfizer is now the second drug manufacturer to develop an oral treatment for COVID-19. U.S. company Merck last month introduced its COVID-19 pill, which clinical studies showed to provide a 50% reduction in hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19. It has been submitted to the FDA, and the federal agency is scheduled to rule on it late this month.

Currently, all COVID-19 treatments approved in the United States require injection or intravenous drip. Pills have the advantage of being distributed by pharmacies and taken at home.

Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approved Merck’s pill, known as Molnupiravir, Thursday. The European Union’s drug regulator, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), said it would speed up its review of the Merck pill, and is prepared to give advice to individual EU member states so they can make the pill available for emergency use ahead of the EMA authorization.

When Merck’s pill was submitted for approval last month, White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said the U.S. government had already arranged to buy 1.7 million doses of the pill, with an option to acquire more if needed.

Lao workers thrive on career development on Laos – China Railway

Since the commencement of the China-Laos Railway construction in December 2016, a number of Lao local talents, pursuing their professional development on the railway, have grown into railway engineering masters.

Khamphiw Tawa, formerly a 36-year-old farmer in the hilly Xiengngeun district of northern Laos’ Luang Prabang province, lived a hard life with four kids to bring up.

Five years ago, many locals still made a living by growing fields or hunting wood in this mountainous area, while the curious Khamphiw noticed many vehicles and Chinese engineers going into the mountains and heard that a long tunnel would be built there for a railway to reach the capital Vientiane.

As soon as the village committee encouraged villagers to apply for jobs with the Chinese company to build the tunnel, Khamphiw went directly to the construction site.

He still remembers his first day on the railway. “On April 13, 2017, I applied for the job,” Khamphiw was shown around a steel processing yard with lots of machines he hadn’t seen, and he felt it was an opportunity to improve himself and his family’s conditions as well.

Khamphiw successfully passed the skilled interview, received training and stayed with the PowerChina Sinohydro Bureau 3 Co., LTD (Sinohydro 3), engaged in welding operations for the railway’s tunnel construction.

“I’ve learned welding before, but it’s not the same here. The tools here are modern and I have learned a lot,” Khamphiw worked hard, and was soon promoted to head of the local welding team.

To his pride, he was also given the assignment to lead a recruitment campaign in his hometown. “I want my village mates to have good jobs and have the money to support their families,” Khamphiw said.

In 2019, Khamphiw was chosen as an “Outstanding Foreign Employee” of Sinohydro 3, and titled as a “Railway Craftsman” by the Laos-China Railway Co., Ltd. (LCRC), a joint venture based in Lao capital Vientiane to build and run the railway.

In the same year of 2019, another 34-year-old man, Somechai Xayyavong, was also named the “Railway Craftsman”.

Coming from the mountainous Xieng Khuang Province, Somechai once worked in a local company building a hydropower plant before joining the railway construction with Sinohydro 15 in 2017.

“I learned more knowledge and learned to use higher-end equipment after coming to work on the railway. The construction of the railway is more complex with more advanced technology employed,” Somechai told Xinhua.

The improvement of the technical skills has endowed him with a broader vision. “The construction of the railway in Laos has just begun, and in the future, the railway may run through the country, connecting every town,” Somechai said, adding that after accumulating more experience and technology, he will “perhaps set up my own mapping company, to cooperate with Chinese partners.”

Aafa Laoly, 20, from the remote Phongsaly Province bordering China in the north, joined China Railway Wuhan Electrification Engineering Group Co. Ltd. (WEEG) in May 2020, and was selected as the “Railway Craftsman” in the first year.

“After my graduation from high school at the age of 18, I went to work in Xishuangbanna, China. I saw China’s development achievements, and I appreciate the hardworking Chinese, hoping to use the skills learned from China to build my home country,” Aafa said.

Aafa told reporters that it is his Chinese mentor Jiang Shuanghong, who unreservedly taught him basic knowledge, installation skills and safety requirements when visiting every construction site, that gradually improved his technical ability, communication skills, organization skills and safety awareness.

“I don’t disappoint my Chinese mentor also,” Aafa told Xinhua, “during construction of the railway, when generating electricity, I am the first staff to carry the generator; when installing high-voltage cable, I am the first carrying the cable and walking in front of the team; when concluding every day’s job, I am always the last one going back after packing up the tools.”

The Laos – China railway will soon start operation as the construction work has almost been completed. At the end of October, there are over 100 Lao trainees interning at the China Railway No. 2 Engineering Group (CREC-2) Vientiane railing base, and they will be a new generation of skilled workers in Laos.

Phonephimone Monechandy is one of them, who has a Chinese name “Peng Mengyu”.

“In 2015, when I was studying at Guiyang Vocational and Technical College in Guizhou, China, I heard that the Laos-China Railway had held a groundbreaking ceremony, and then I decided to choose a major in railway operation and management,” She recalled.

The railway passes by Peng Mengyu’s hometown of Meuangxay. After returning home, Peng signed up for the first training session of LCRC, and became a trainee in the train driver class.

“I have great admiration for the Laos-China Railway construction staff, who have been working hard all year round in the last five years,” Peng Mengyu said, “I am carrying full of yearning for the Lao railway cause and its future, and of confidence that joining the railway cause will surely help realize my value in life.”

Xiao Qianwen, the LCRC general manager, told reporters in October, “In the five-year construction period, we were sincerely pleased to see much Lao staff grow up as our company’s Railway Craftsmen.” He believed that with the joint efforts of the staff from both countries, the Laos – China Railway will become a platform for inheriting and carrying forward the bilateral friendship and a stage for Laos to achieve national prosperity and the well-being of its people.

U.S. Supports the Lao Bar Association to Increase Free Legal Access for Vulnerable Populations

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) provided a grant of over LAK 525 million (equivalent to US$54,768) to the Lao Bar Association (LBA) at the Vientiane Court on Oct 28.

USAID Country Representative to Laos Michael Ronning and officials from the Ministry of Justice witnessed the signing of the grant between Vice President of the Lao Bar Association Volatsamy Soulipaphanh and the Asia Foundation Country Representative Todd Wassel.

The grant is part of the USAID Legal Aid Support Programme, implemented by the Asia Foundation. LBA will use the grant to operate 17 Legal Aid Clinics, opened with support from USAID, in Vientiane, and Champassak, Savannakhet, Saravan, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Xayaboury, and Vientiane (province).

Mr. Ronning highlighted the partnership with LBA and the Ministry of Justice in promoting access to justice for vulnerable populations in the Lao PDR. Mr. Ronning said, “This grant reaffirms our commitment with the government of Laos, under the U.S. Lao Comprehensive Partnership, to promote access to justice for all in the Lao PDR. USAID is committed to continue these efforts alongside the government of Laos.”

The USAID Legal Aid Support programme helps advance the goal of the Lao PDR, as described in the 9th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (NSEDP), and to become a rule of law state.

To date, USAID, The Asia Foundation (TAF), and LBA have opened 17 Legal Aid Clinics, which have provided Lao citizens with free legal aid services.

The United States also partners with the Lao PDR on a wide range of activities to promote basic education, improve health and nutrition, facilitate trade and investment, and counter trafficking in persons.

Media plays key role in promoting women’s health, rights towards fulfilling ICPD25, SDGs

Lao media agencies and communications officers from the line ministries and mass organizations discussed the role of media in promoting women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights towards fulfilling the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Commitment which is a stepping stone for the realisation of the SDGs and 9th NSEDP.

The workshop was organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and the Ministry of Health (MoH) on Oct 26.

The workshop aimed to raise media awareness on critical ICPD issues: development and population, sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, including how they are set back by COVID-19. The workshop also provided space to discuss and strengthen partnership with the media in promoting and accelerating the ICPD implementation and the Noi ecosystem approach to achieve Noi 2030 framework results.

In her remarks, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment Phonevanh Outthavong emphasised the importance of the implementation of ICPD commitments, “which aligns with the National Socio-economic Development Plan (NSEDP) and the sustainable development goals (SDGs).”

She also expressed her gratitude to the solid partnership and support from UNFPA and other development partners in the ICPD implementation. “While we have made progress, there are challenges especially the current COVID-10 pandemic that may delay our implementation. Therefore, we must work together across all sectors including media to accelerate our action towards fulfilling the commitments in ten years,” she added.

Ms. Mariam A. Khan drew attention to the urgency of addressing COVID-19 impact across sectors. She said “Under MPI leadership, UNFPA Laos is preparing its 7th country programme (CP7) 2022-2026, aligned to national priorities and addressing COVID-19 impact. Innovation is required to tackle setbacks, not just maintain progress but accelerate so we can meet development targets”

The ICPD Programme of Action was remarkable in recognizing that reproductive health and rights, women’s empowerment, and gender equality are cornerstones of population and development. The Lao PDR is a signatory to ICPD committing to end maternal deaths, unmet need for family, gender-based violence, and harmful practices.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges including disruption of Reproductive Maternal Newborn Child Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) services, posing the risk of increased maternal deaths and unplanned pregnancy.

Data and Assessment indicates the increase of violence against women, as well as the risk of child marriage and adolescent pregnancy due to increased dropout rate as a result of school closures. Mental health and psychosocial issues are clearly rising. These hamper the progress towards fulfilling national development targets.

Dr. Phonepaseuth Ounaphom, Director of Department of Hygiene and Health Promotion, MoH highlighted the importance of the continuity of the RMNCAH service by applying innovative telehealth which has been expanded to six provinces.

He also acknowledged the importance of the role of media in promoting maternal and child health including reproductive health. He said “the media can raise the awareness of women of reproductive age, pregnant women and mothers by providing information and motivating them to seek healthcare.”

India inaugurates Kushinagar International Airport

Early this week, Oct 20, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Kushinagar International Airport (KIA) which he termed as a tribute to the devotion of Buddhist society around the world.

Addressing the gathering, he said that India is the centre of the faith of Buddhist society around the world.

This region, he said, is witness to the entire journey from the enlightenment of Lord Buddha to Mahaparinirvana. This important region is getting directly connected to the world, he said.

He highlighted the special focus on the development of the places associated with Lord Buddha through better connectivity and the creation of facilities for the devotees.

The premier welcomed the Sri Lankan flight and delegation that landed at Kushinagar. Paying tribute to Maharshi Valmiki on his Jayanti, he said that the country is marching on the path of Sabka Vikas (Development of all) with the help of Sabka Satha (With involvement of all) and Sabka Prayas (With efforts of all). Development of Kushinagar is one of the key priorities of the Government of State of Uttar Pradesh and Government of India, he said.

“Tourism in all its forms, whether for faith or for leisure, needs modern infrastructure complete with rail, road, airways, waterways, hotels, hospitals, internet connectivity, hygiene, sewage treatment and renewable energy ensuring a clean environment. All these are interconnected and it is important to work on all these simultaneously. Today’s 21st century India is moving ahead with this approach only,” he said.

The leader announced that under the UDAN scheme, more than 900 new routes have been approved in the last few years, out of which air service has already started on more than 350 routes. More than 50 new airports or those which were not in service earlier have been made operational.

He highlighted the development regarding the aviation sector in Uttar Pradesh as air connectivity is constantly improving in the state. In Uttar Pradesh, eight airports are already functional before Kushinagar airport.

Work is in progress on Jewar International Airport after Lucknow, Varanasi and Kushinagar. Apart from that, airport projects are going on in Ayodhya, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Chitrakoot, Moradabad and Shravasti.

Referring to the recent decision on Air India, he remarked that the step will help in running the country’s aviation sector professionally and prioritizing convenience and safety. This step will give new energy to the aviation sector of India. One such major reform is related to the opening of defence airspace for civil use, he added. This step will reduce the distance on various air routes. He also conveyed that the recently launched drone policy is going to bring life-changing transformation in the fields ranging from agriculture to health, to disaster management to defence.

He said recently launched PM Gatishakti – National Master Plan will not only improve governance but also ensure that all modes of transport such as road, rail, air etc should support each other and increase each other’s capacity.

A revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists the world over, Kushinagar is believed to be the place where Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana after his death. Now with the inauguration of KIA, pilgrims from across the globe will have ease of access to this sacred place.

The inauguration of KIA will also offer more direct connectivity for Lao devotees to visit Buddhist circuit in India.
