2024 Ha Long Carnival to showcase parades at sea


Quang Ninh: This year, for the first time, the Ha Long Carnival will feature performances and parades on both the sea and sandy shores of the popular UNESCO-recognised bay, as heard at a quarterly press conference of the People’s Committee of the northeastern coastal province of Quang Ninh on April 8.

According to Nguyen Ngoc Son, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of the province’s Ha Long City, the municipal annual signature is scheduled for April 28 evening and its novelty is the city’s endeavor to hold an artistic performance and the first-ever carnival on the sea in Vietnam.

The festival will bring together domestic creative teams, leading artists, and craftsmen, as well as troupes from Japan’s Hokkaido, China’s Guangxi, Laos, Thailand, and Europe. The stage is set to harmoniously combine elements both on the shore and on the sea, with hundreds of vessels participating. The event will also feature drone light, firework, and LED displays.

Furthermore, as part of the Ha Long tourism week 2024, the
city will host a series events, including the opening of a culinary pedestrian street, a sport tournament, a festival of beer and the province’s famous fried squid patties, as well as lion-dragon dance, modern dance, and kite festivals./.

Canoeists to vie for Asian championship glory, Olympic spots


Hanoi: Four Vietnamese athletes will compete at the 2024 Canoeing Sprint Asian Championships which is also an Olympic qualifying event in Japan next week.

The national team just ended their training camp in Thailand and will head to Tokyo in the next few days.

The April 18-21 offers 10 men’s, women’s and mixed disciplines in both kayaking and canoeing in different distances ranging from 200m to 1000m. Athletes with disabilities also compete in 12 events.

The top two from each category will earn a place at the Paris Games.

Vietnamese canoeists have never qualified for the Olympics in the past.

In their latest tournament at the 2023 world championships, Nguyen Thi Huong and teammate Nguyen Hong Thai took part in two individual and one pair events but none of them could advance to the top three./.

Young boxers to take part in Asian championship in Kazakhstan


Hanoi: Fighters from Vietnam will compete in the 2024 Asian U22 and Youth Boxing Championships in Astana capital of Kazakhstan from April 25 to May 10.

Among 16 competitors, the boxers with the most potential are Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tran, Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai and Nguyen Huyen Tran.

Ngoc Tran won a silver in the U22 category last year. She also secured a bronze in the women’s 50kg at the world championships for young people in 2021.

Huyen Tran was one of Vietnamese team taking part in the Olympic qualification’s ‘ women’s 60kg in March in Italy.

Meanwhile national champion Mai is the rising star in the women’s 46kg class.

According to the coaching board, Vietnam target is to win at least one medal from this competition and hope fighters sharpen their skills and learn from foreign competitors.

Draws will be conducted on April 26 while finals will be held on May 6-7./.

HCM City Int’l Film Festival 2024 opens


HCM City: The Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival 2024 (HIFF 2024) opened in the southern metropolis on April 6.

Running from April 6-13, the festival includes three main competition categories, including Southeast Asian films, debut and short films, with many awards such as Golden Star Award for Best Southeast Asian Film; Best Emerging Director; Best Short Film; and Ho Chi Minh City Film awards. In addition, there are awards for directors, actors, cinematographers, editors, and visual effects, among others.

There will be a wide range of sideline activities with the participation of international artists and visitors, including a gala film screening; training courses conducted by directors, actors, producers, and experts who have a lot of experience in the movie industry; music and fashion performances; a food fair; a film industry exhibition introducing the development history of the movie industry of HCM City, Vietnam and the world, famous producers, directors, and movie stars in Nguyen Hue walki
ng street; and seminars on the importance of funding for film development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s committee Duong Anh Duc said that the locality is considered a large market for film production and distribution in the country. The film industry is identified as one of eight key industries, with an average growth rate of about 12% a year and revenue reaching over 5 trillion VND (200 million USD), of which Vietnamese films account for about 30% of revenue, contributing about 0.4% of the city’s GRDP by 2025.

Duc also said HIFF 2024 is expected to improve the quality and reputation of the city’s movie industry, and promote HCM City as a destination for domestic and foreign filmmakers, towards becoming a film city and join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

The HIFF 2024 received more than 400 entries, with 56 projects participating in the Project Market and 87 scripts joining the Vietnamese Script Incubator (VietScript Lab)./.

French food festival 2024 opens in Hanoi


Hanoi: The French food festival 2024 named ‘Balade En France’ was opened in Hanoi on April 5 under the auspices of the French embassy in Vietnam and the municipal People’s Committee.

Taking place to April 7, the festival boasts nearly 80 pavilions, about 50% more than the last year’s edition, offering famous French food and demonstrations by chiefs.

French Ambassador Olivier Brochet affirmed the event honours the French food and creates a chance to emphasise the France-Vietnam cultural cooperation.

Within the framework of the festival, a space of 300sq.m. will be marked off into a sport village to popularise the upcoming Paris Olympic and Paralympic. Besides, there will be a street dance event called ‘Balade En France – All in One 2024’ to be performed by students of schools in the Francophone block in Hanoi.

First held in 2018, the festival drew 300,000 visits last year in its three days./.
