Bacolod city: Ethan Lago and Denise Mendoza emerged as the early leaders in the 7-10 age category at the start of the Negros Occidental Junior PGT Championship. The tournament, held in Bacolod City, witnessed impressive performances from the young golfers on Monday.
According to Philippines News Agency, eight-year-old Ethan Lago from Ateneo de Davao took a commanding lead in the boys’ division. Lago’s even-par 70, marked by three birdies and three bogeys, placed him nine shots ahead of Lucas Revilleza, who shot a 79. Lago expressed confidence in his game, aiming to maintain his performance and stay focused.
In the girls’ division, 10-year-old Denise Mendoza fired a 72, creating a 16-stroke gap between herself and Bacolod’s Ana Marie Aguilar, who carded an 88. Mendoza, who is currently tied for third in the season rankings, is in pursuit of her third Junior PGT title. She acknowledged the need to improve her putting, having missed several makeable shots.
The championship also saw notable performances in the 11-14 category. Ralph Batican of Bukidnon delivered an impressive one-under 69, with five birdies, outshining his competitors by 19 strokes. His sister, Rafella Batican, led the girls’ division with a score of 73, followed closely by Cebu’s Zuri Bagaloyos.
In the boys’ 15-18 division, local golfer John Paul Oro scored an even-par 70, securing a five-shot lead over Alexis Nailga. Oro attributed his success to strong putting and strategic play. In the girls’ division, Davao’s Tashanah Balangauan led with a 73, three shots ahead of Precious Zaragosa.
The top four players in each age division will advance to the Ryder Cup-style finals at The Country Club in Laguna from September 30 to October 3. The event is organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.
