CEBU CITY: The Roman Catholic faithful in Cebu issued Wednesday a statement expressing opposition to the divorce bill passed by Congress.
‘The Constitution of the Philippines protects marriage as a social institution, which is not compatible with the concept of divorce,’ said Fe Mantuhac-Barino, chair of the Commission on Laity of the Archdiocese of Cebu.
Barino said that divorce is unnecessary, citing the existing legal remedies in the Family Code such as legal separation, annulment, and declaration of nullity of marriage.
She, however, mentioned the reality of marital breakdown that the couples need support and guidance in their difficult situations, citing church works like pastoral care, counseling, and annulment process that examines the validity of the marriage.
‘The Catholic Church believes in upholding the well-being and stability of the family unit, considering it essential for the healthy development of children. Children from divorced families may experience emotional, psychological, and social
challenges,’ she added.
Barino said that upholding the permanence of marriage promotes the common good and the flourishing of society.
If it becomes a law, divorce will negate the divine command that no man should separate what God has joined together, she said.
‘The stability of marriages and families contributes to the well-being and stability of society as a whole,’ Barino said, even as she stressed the negative effects of divorce on individuals, families, and communities.
