CIO Requests Police Assistance in Detaining President Yoon Over Martial Law Bid

Seoul: The state anti-corruption agency has requested police assistance to execute a warrant to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol in connection with his failed martial law attempt. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) made this urgent request to law enforcement as the expiration of the warrant loomed on Monday.

According to Lao News Agency, the CIO initially paused the warrant’s execution last Friday following a prolonged confrontation with presidential security at the residence. The agency has since collaborated with the police and the defense ministry’s investigation unit to launch a joint investigation into Yoon’s brief imposition of martial law on December 3.

With the warrant’s expiration imminent at midnight, the CIO faced pressure to either make another attempt to detain Yoon or seek an extension of the warrant. “We are internally carrying out a legal review,” a police official told Yonhap News Agency, indicating ongoing deliberations.
