DILG Orders Local Gov’ts: Prepare for Strength of ‘Nando’

Manila: The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) on Saturday directed local government units (LGUs) in areas at risk from Typhoon Nando to carry out preemptive or mandatory evacuation of residents, particularly those in coastal, low-lying, and landslide-prone communities.

According to Philippines News Agency, the directive supports President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s call for proactive and unified disaster response to strengthen community resilience and save lives. LGUs of affected areas were told to strictly enforce the no-sail policy and liquor ban to ensure public safety and order during emergency operations. Small-scale fishing and sea travel are suspended until conditions improve.

The department instructed LGUs to prepare evacuation centers with adequate power, supplies, and humanitarian assistance for displaced families, including fisherfolk affected by the no-sail policy. The DILG urged continuous monitoring of weather updates, readiness of health units and response teams, and the clearing of waterways to prevent secondary hazards.

Inspections of quarry and mining sites, as well as assessments of dam stability, were also ordered as precautionary measures. ‘All concerned officials must take immediate critical actions to minimize risk and protect lives and livelihoods,’ the DILG said. The public must stay alert, cooperate with authorities, and follow local advisories, the DILG reminded.

According to state weather bureau PAGASA, Nando is expected to intensify into a super typhoon by Monday before passing near the Batanes-Babuyan Islands. Storm surge warnings have been raised in the coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Cagayan.
