DPWH-Bicol’s P49-M project shields Sorsogon villagers from flood

LEGAZPI CITY – A PHP49-million flood control project of the Department of Public Works and Highways-Bicol (DPWH-5) now safeguards residents in Gubat, Sorsogon, especially during bad weather.

In a statement on Wednesday, DPWH-5 Regional Director Virgilio Eduarte said the 320-meter flood control project shields a populated area of Barangay Tabi from the destructive impact of seasonal flooding.

‘Before the project’s completion, typhoon and monsoon rains would cause the overflow of the river in the area, freely flooding adjacent riverside and agricultural lands. Our dike now prevents this destruction from happening,’ Eduarte said.

He said the project was completed last June 18, three months ahead of the schedule of the contract, which is Sept. 24.

Consuelo Ermino, a housewife from Barangay Tabi, said they are very grateful for the project that gives them peace of mind, especially during the rainy season.

“Maugmahon na kami ng mga taga-Tabi, wara na kami kulba baga kun nag uuran, magbaha man siya safety na k
ami (We, the residents of Barangay Tabi, are very happy. We don’t have fear that every time it rains, it would flood. We are safe now),” she said in an interview.

Ermino added that aside from the safety from flood, senior citizens, health enthusiasts, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) use the pathway space for walking.

The completed project also covered the installation of reinforced cement pipe culverts as drainage, and metal railings as a safety feature. (PNA)
