DSWD Provides P19-Million Aid to Eastern Samar Families Impacted by Severe Storm

Tacloban: In line with directives from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through its Field Office-8 (Eastern Visayas), has extended a total of PHP19.77 million in humanitarian assistance to individuals and families affected by Severe Tropical Storm Opong, internationally known as Bualoi, in Eastern Samar.

According to Philippines News Agency, data from DSWD’s Field Office 8 indicated that the aid comprised 32,371 boxes of family food packs, 400 boxes of ready-to-eat foods, and 151 pieces of non-food items. Additionally, cash aid under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program was provided to rescued fisherfolk, as well as families of those injured or deceased due to the storm.

Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao stated that the FO-8 had assisted five fishermen from Maydolong municipality who were rescued after venturing into the sea during the storm’s onslaught. ‘As instructed by Secretary Rex Gatchalian, the DSWD Eastern Visayas immediately provided assistance to each of the rescued fishermen. We also assured their families that the Department will assist them until their full recovery,’ Dumlao said.

Each survivor received two boxes of family food packs and non-food items, including hygiene, family, kitchen, and sleeping kits, alongside PHP10,000 cash assistance for medical needs. The DSWD also extended cash aid through the AICS program to the families of 10 casualties to help cover burial and funeral expenses, and provided medical assistance to families of nine injured individuals.

The agency continues its disaster response and relief operations across Eastern Visayas and other regions heavily affected by Opong. As per the latest data, more than PHP224 million worth of humanitarian aid has been provided to families impacted by recent cyclones.

‘To our affected kababayans, we stand with you during these difficult times. Rest assured that the DSWD remains committed to supporting your present needs until you recover and rebuild your lives,’ Dumlao affirmed.
