Duterte Welfare Check Part of ‘Routine’ for Filipinos in Distress

Manila: Malaca±ang on Monday clarified that the welfare check conducted on former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) facility, is part of the Philippine government’s routine protocol for Filipinos ‘in distress.’

According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the visit by Philippine officials was consistent with the long-standing procedures carried out by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and other government agencies when a Filipino abroad requires assistance, particularly in matters concerning health and well-being.

Castro explained that the DFA’s actions align with their routine procedures whenever a Filipino is in distress and in need of assistance, especially regarding their health condition. She emphasized the role of the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and consular officials in making these visits to check on the status and well-being of Filipinos abroad.

The Philippine government will not provide further updates on Duterte’s health, as it is considered a private matter. Castro mentioned a recent assurance from Duterte’s former wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, confirming his well-being.

The DFA previously stated that the welfare check on Duterte is consistent with their actions for other detained Filipino citizens abroad. Duterte faces formal charges from the ICC Prosecutor for crimes against humanity related to the deaths during his anti-illegal drugs campaign as Davao City mayor and as president.
