The First Session of the 13th National People’s Congress (NPC) was officially kicked off in Beijing on March 5 in the presence of General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President Xi Jinping.
Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang reported the meeting about the performance of the government and the socio-economic development over the past five years in the presence of almost 3,000 deputies.
The Chinese premier also briefed the meeting about the 2018 socio-economic development plan.
Over the past five years, China’s GDP rose from CNY 54 trillion to CNY 82.7 trillion
(US$12.25 trillion) with average annual growth rate of 7.1 per cent, and China’s share in the global economy grew to roughly 15 per cent, up from 11.4 per cent, according to Keqiang’s report.
China’s contribution to global growth exceeded 30 per cent. The Government revenue increased from CNY 11.7 trillion to CNY 17.3 trillion.
Poverty headcount ratio dropped from 10.2 to 3.1 per cent.
Personal income increased by an annual average of 7.4 per cent, outpacing economic growth over the last five years.
The composition of Chinese foreign trade and foreign investment in China improved, and volumes ranked among the largest in the world.
This year plan of economic and social development, China set its goal for GDP growth of around 6.5 per cent, create 11 million jobs in 2018.
The work of government in 2018 will focus on developing high-speed broadband, speed up work to build China into a leader in manufacturing, making China a country of innovators and invest CNY 732 billion in railway construction.

There will be 10 items on the agenda including deliberating on the report on the performance of the government, reviewing reports on planning, budget, draft amendments to the
Constitution, draft supervision law, report of the NPC Standing Committee, report of the
China Supreme People’s Court, report of the China Supreme People’s Procuratorate, plan of the State Council institutional reform and elect and decide on the appointment of state institution officials, according to the CRI.
After the session closes on the morning of March 20, the new Premier of the Sate Council and new Vice Premier will meet Chinese and international media.
