Manila: A labor group has expressed support for the appointment of retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr. as the chair of the newly established Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), which is tasked with investigating irregularities in flood control projects.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Federation of Free Workers (FFW) praised Justice Reyes for his distinguished track record in the judiciary and stated their confidence in his integrity. They expressed hope that under his leadership, the commission would significantly contribute to combating corruption. The FFW emphasized the importance of pursuing truth with independence, transparency, and courage, and reiterated the need to recover misappropriated public funds and hold those responsible accountable.
The ICI, chaired by Reyes, includes former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Rogelio Singson and SGV and Co. Country Managing Partner Rossana Fajardo. Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong will serve as a special adviser and investigator. The commission was established through Executive Order No. 94 issued on September 11, with a mandate to investigate and recommend charges against individuals involved in fraudulent activities related to DPWH flood control projects over the past decade.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jose Antonio Goitia, Chairman Emeritus of the Alyansa ng Bantay sa Kapayapaan at Demokrasya (ABKD), defended the Executive Branch amidst criticism from lawmakers in the House of Representatives who have blamed Malaca±ang and the Cabinet for budgetary issues linked to flood control projects. He criticized these lawmakers for deflecting responsibility and accused them of attempting to divert public attention from their own shortcomings.
Goitia also defended Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, against what he described as baseless accusations, asserting that such claims undermine the principles of good governance. He highlighted Bersamin’s commitment to law, fairness, and the defense of democratic institutions.
