House Bill Proposes Tripling Teachers’ Day Incentive to PHP3,000

Manila: House Assistant Minority Leader and Eastern Samar Rep. Christopher Sheen Gonzales has introduced a bill aiming to triple the World Teachers’ Day Incentive Benefit (WTDIB) for public school teachers under the Department of Education (DepEd), increasing the cash gift from PHP1,000 to PHP3,000.

According to Philippines News Agency, House Bill 4531, filed by Gonzales on September 11, seeks to make the WTDIB a permanent fixture, initially introduced six years ago through the General Appropriations Law of 2019. This incentive is distributed to over 950,000 public school teachers across the nation, coinciding with the annual World Teachers’ Day celebration on October 5.

Gonzales, who serves on the House committee on basic education and culture, emphasized that teachers are central to nation-building. By enhancing the WTDIB, the government is not only offering financial support but also demonstrating the country’s appreciation for educators’ dedication and sacrifices. He noted that the proposed increase would assist teachers in managing the rising living costs and reinforce their professional commitment.

Gonzales further stated that investing in teachers equates to investing in the future generation of Filipinos. The bill aims to foster an environment where educators are valued, supported, and empowered to excel. He described the incentive as more than a financial benefit, labeling it an expression of national gratitude for teachers’ relentless efforts, often extending beyond classroom duties, to ensure every child’s success.

Currently, the country is celebrating National Teachers’ Month from September 5 to October 5. The global observance of World Teachers’ Day on October 5, instituted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), underscores the essential role of teachers in shaping societies worldwide. In the Philippines, Republic Act 10743 designates October 5 as National Teachers’ Day, aligning with the international celebration and honoring educators’ vital contributions to national progress.
