Japan and UNDP Collaborate to Build Evacuation Centers in Southern Laos.

Vientiane: The support of the Government of Japan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is planning to build 12 evacuation centers in Khammouane, Salavan, and Champasack provinces over the next 3 years.

According to Lao News Agency, the signing of the funding agreement took place in Vientiane on 19th November 2024. Mr. Koizumi Tsutomu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Japan to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, expressed that the project aims to enhance disaster resilience by ensuring safety during emergencies and promoting disaster awareness.

The initiative, named the Strengthening Disaster Response Capacity through the Improvement of Evacuation Shelters project, or simply the Evacuation Center project, seeks to establish resilient infrastructure to support communities. Ms. Martine Thérer, Resident Representative of UNDP in the Lao PDR, emphasized that the project also aims to enhance national policies and strengthen capacities at both national and community levels.
The goal is to better prepare for and withstand disasters, ensuring individuals can protect their livelihoods, improve economic resilience, and reduce socioeconomic inequalities when disasters occur.

The collaboration highlights the strategic partnership between Japan and Laos, focusing on building a culture of preparedness and resilience against natural disasters. This effort underlines the broader commitment to improve infrastructure and policy frameworks to safeguard communities in Southern Laos.
