Vientiane: In an important moment for sustainable development in Southeast Asia, the Lao PDR today officially launched the Convergence Initiative, a pioneering national programme that integrates food systems transformation with climate action to benefit the millions of Lao citizens who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
According to Lao News Agency, the two-day National High-Level Meeting and Inception Workshop brought together over 80 influential leaders representing government ministries, international development organizations, private sector companies, civil society groups, universities, and youth advocates. This gathering marks the largest multi-stakeholder meeting of its kind since the merging of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of National Resource and Environment.
The initiative is being recognized as a groundbreaking effort in regional leadership, with the Lao PDR positioning itself alongside countries like Brazil, Indonesia, and Thailand in addressing global challenges. Mr. Stefanos Fotiou, Director of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, emphasized the Lao PDR’s role as a trailblazer by adopting innovative solutions for its future.
The Convergence Initiative arrives at a transformative period following the merger of the agriculture and environment ministries in Lao PDR, creating new opportunities for coordinated actions that benefit both farmers and the environment. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Chanthakhone Boualaphanh, stressed the human aspect of this transformation, focusing on enhancing farmer incomes, nutrition, and resilience for rural communities through the National Action Plan for 2025-2030.
Ambitious goals include increasing farmer incomes through climate-smart agriculture, reducing childhood malnutrition, implementing sustainable land management, and building climate resilience in rural areas. The initiative has gained global recognition with the UN Joint SDG Fund supporting the Lao PDR’s strategic vision. UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Bakhodir Burkhanov noted the importance of strong partnerships and unified action in building resilient and inclusive food systems.
The initiative combines innovative approaches with traditional practices, integrating digital solutions, climate-smart techniques, innovative financing, and knowledge-sharing networks. Ms. Kyung Mee Kim, FAO Country Representative, highlighted the comprehensive support package, which includes technical expertise and capacity building to empower Lao communities.
As global leaders prepare for climate and food security summits, the Lao PDR’s Convergence Initiative serves as a model for other developing nations. The approach demonstrates how countries can utilize their unique strengths to develop effective solutions. In the coming months, participants will create the “Convergence Action Blueprint” to guide implementation, representing a fundamental reimagining of development in Lao PDR that centers on farmers, families, and the environment.
