Vientiane: The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, through the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, in collaboration with the Vientiane Capital Department of Agriculture and Forestry and Hatxayfong District authorities, spearheaded a significant release ceremony at the Vientiane Canal in Ban Nahai, Hatxayfong District. This event, held on July 13, marked National Fish and Aquatic Animal Release Day and aimed to replenish aquatic life in natural waters.
According to Lao News Agency, the event witnessed participation from key figures, including Minister of Agriculture and Environment Mr. Linkham Douangsavanh, deputy ministers, ambassadors, youth groups, and other stakeholders. During the ceremony, more than 400,000 fingerlings, comprising mackerel, catfish, and various native species, were introduced into the canal. This activity is part of a broader national initiative aiming to release 65 million fingerlings across Laos by 2025.
Celebrating its 28th year, this annual event seeks to foster conservation awareness among youth and the wider community. It underscores the significance of replenishing natural aquatic ecosystems and is held in conjunction with the 116th birthday of President Souphanouvong, a highly esteemed national leader.
Mr. Phanthavong Vongsamphan, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, emphasized the role of fingerlings and aquatic animals in ensuring food security and nutrition. In 2024, it was reported that the average Lao citizen consumed approximately 30 kg of fish and aquatic animals annually, which contributed to over 40% of their total protein intake, with pork and poultry following at 18 kg and 9.5 kg per person, respectively.
The campaign underscores Laos’ dedication to sustainable aquatic resource management and biodiversity conservation, aiming to maintain ecological balance and secure livelihoods for future generations.
