Marcos Cancels US Trip to Attend UN General Assembly

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has decided not to proceed with his planned visit to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this month. Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Dave Gomez made this announcement on Monday, stating that the President’s decision was made to prioritize local issues.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gomez mentioned that Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro will represent the Philippines at the UNGA in lieu of President Marcos. Gomez explained to reporters, “The President has delegated his engagements at the UNGA to the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to allow him to focus on local issues.”

The 80th session of the UNGA, which began earlier this month, includes the High-level Week where heads of state and government traditionally deliver their addresses. This segment of the assembly is scheduled to run from September 22 to 30. The UNGA serves as the main legislative and policymaking body of the UN, where leaders convene to address international issues as outlined by the UN Charter.
