Marcos Orders Contractors to Bear Costs for Substandard Infrastructure Fixes

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a directive compelling contractors responsible for substandard infrastructure, particularly flood control projects, to rectify their work at their own cost. Speaking at a press briefing in Malaca±ang, he emphasized that government projects are backed by warranties that contractors must honor if defects are discovered.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos stated that even if contractors claim project completion, they are still obligated to respect the warranty provided and ensure the project is properly completed. Marcos asserted that errant contractors would be held accountable, insisting they must redo and properly fix any substandard work using their own funds.

The President highlighted that the newly established Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) will focus on accountability and addressing financial losses. He emphasized that the issue should not be politicized but rather approached through straightforward examination of financial discrepancies. Marcos also mentioned the possibility of legal actions following the ICI’s findings.

The creation of the commission was prompted by revelations of alleged irregularities in multi-billion-peso flood control projects, issues that Marcos had previously flagged in his 2025 State of the Nation Address.
