PBBM to Protesters: Be Heard, Be Enraged but Keep It Peaceful

Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday said he understands public anger over alleged corruption in multi-billion peso flood control projects, urging groups set to hold protest actions to express their grievances but to do so peacefully. Speaking to reporters in Malaca±ang, Marcos said the exposure of irregularities in infrastructure projects justified the outrage.

According to Philippines News Agency, the President encouraged protesters to make their sentiments known, noting that they have every right to be angry. Marcos emphasized that while the protests are a legitimate expression of public sentiment, they must remain peaceful to avoid any law enforcement intervention. He warned that if protests turn violent, the police would be required to maintain peace and order.

Marcos further affirmed the right of citizens to express outrage and demand accountability, stating that he shares in the public’s desire for justice and fairness. He announced the appointment of retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr. as chair of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), which is tasked with investigating the anomalies. The commission will operate independently from Malaca±ang and will meet daily to address the issues.

The ICI also includes former Public Works Secretary Rogelio ‘Babes’ Singson and SGV and Co. executive Rossana Fajardo as commissioners, with Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong serving as a consultant. Protest actions against alleged corruption in infrastructure spending, particularly flood control projects, are expected to peak on Sept. 21.
