Pi±a Exhibit Showcases Aklan Handloom Weaving Tradition in Rome

Rome: The Philippines has launched the Aklan Pi±a Handloom Weaving Exhibit in Rome, Italy, a cultural showcase highlighting the country’s centuries-old textile tradition. The event will be held until Oct. 15 at the Philippine Embassy in Rome and serves as a companion to the successful Bianchi Contaminati Fashion Show, which reimagined the nation’s rich textile heritage through the lens of contemporary Italian design.

According to Philippines News Agency, the exhibit celebrates the artistry of pi±a weaving from Aklan, a craft globally recognized when it was inscribed in 2023 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Beyond its artistic value, the showcase underscores the Philippine Embassy’s commitment to promoting Philippine culture and heritage through world-renowned textiles.

The exhibit features an impressive collection of handwoven pi±a textiles, tools, and garments, showcasing the intricate artistry and cultural depth of this unique Philippine craft. ‘Pi±a, together with other native fabrics such as jusi, has long conveyed deeply rooted Filipino values of decency, propriety, and moral uprightness — reflected in the way these garments shaped the sartorial traditions of our society,’ Philippine Ambassador to Italy Neal Imperial said during the exhibit opening on Sept. 5.

He added, ‘It is the Embassy’s hope that this exhibition will spark greater appreciation for this exquisite fabric, highlight its place in our cultural heritage, and inspire others to embrace it as a medium for cultural exchange and dialogue.’

The exhibit is in collaboration with the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) and aims to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and transmitting traditional textile arts to future generations. In conjunction with the exhibit, the NMP conducted two embroidery workshop sessions to engage Italian student designers as well as second- and third-generation Filipinos in Italy.

The workshops offered participants a hands-on introduction to traditional weaving techniques, fostering both intercultural dialogue and appreciation for Philippine craftsmanship. Participants were also treated to a screening of the documentary ‘Segunda Pulo: Filipino Heritage Through the Artisans’ Hands,’ which pays tribute to the richness of Filipino heritage and the enduring artistry of its master craftsmen, with a particular emphasis on the intricate beauty of Philippine textiles.
