Manila: Port police officers will soon undergo the first-ever Seaport Special Response Course (SSRC), a 30-day intensive training course with the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF). In a statement on Tuesday, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) General Manager Jay Santiago said 24 officers will undergo the training course to equip them with critical skills to prevent, respond to, and manage disasters, untoward incidents, and security threats at seaports.
According to Philippines News Agency, Santiago emphasized the importance of the training, stating, “When the time comes that your skills are tested, ang pagkakataong ito ang magiging sandigan ng inyong tagumpay. Hindi lang para sa misyon, kundi sa mga buhay na inyong po-protektahan at sa mga pantalan ng inyong pagbabantayan (this opportunity will be the basis of your success. Not only for the mission, but also for the lives of those you protect and the ports you guard).” The SSRC was launched on Monday and aims to build on previous initiatives such as the Basic Port Police Training Course held in La Union in 2024.
The SSRC is more than just a skills development program. It reflects a strategic partnership between the PPA and PNP-SAF, highlighting a shared commitment to ensure that the country’s ports remain safe, secure, and resilient in the face of evolving threats. Currently, there are around 300 port police officers deployed across major ports, with a growing demand for personnel amid port expansions.
During the launch, top PPA executives gathered to witness the opening ceremony of SSRC Class 01-2025. They were joined by PNP-SAF Director Maj. Gen. Mark Pespes, who reminded the officers to apply their skills responsibly and to live a life of service.
