Visit of Australia’s Special Envoy for S.E. Asia to the Lao PDR

In November 2022, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appointed a Special Envoy for Southeast Asia, Mr Nicholas Moore to lead development of the Australian Government’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

The Special Envoy will visit Vientiane from 11 to 13 July as part of his regional consultations to help guide the development of the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy.

The Strategy will set out a practical pathway to strengthen Australia’s economic engagement with Southeast Asia, by mapping current and emerging opportunities to bolster two-way trade and investment.

While in the Lao PDR, the Special Envoy will meet with leading business figures from a range of sectors, including energy and mining.

He will meet key counterparts in the Government of the Lao PDR responsible for promoting trade and investment. He will also gain insight into how Australia’s long-running development cooperation has strengthened the business environment in the Lao PDR.

Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs has said that “The appointment of the Special Envoy for Southeast Asia is a clear signal of the priority Australia places on expanding our economic relationship with the region.”

The Strategy will be released in the second half of 2023.
