Zamboanga City Launches Waste Segregation Program with Color-Coded Bins

Zamboanga city: The Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR) has intensified its campaign for a cleaner and healthier environment by distributing color-coded garbage bins on Monday across communities, offices, and establishments.

According to Philippines News Agency, the rollout of nine color-coded garbage bins is in line with the directive of Mayor Khymer Olaso to fully enforce solid waste segregation under the city’s flagship environmental drive. OCENR acting chief Gerry Pollisco said in an interview with reporters that the initiative is a significant step towards better waste management practices in the city.

Pollisco held a demonstration at the City Hall after the flag-raising on Monday, showing officials and employees how to properly dispose of plastics, metals, paper, residuals, healthcare waste, hazardous electronic waste, biodegradable materials, and used cooking oil. The demonstration emphasized the importance of responsible waste management in protecting the city’s environment.

Mayor Olaso commended the OCENR for its proactive efforts and ordered the quick rollout of the segregation program across the city. The program will be strictly enforced in all offices under the city government, as well as in fast food chains, restaurants, and eventually in all other areas of the city.

The program is anchored on the Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) Guidelines approved by the National Solid Waste Management Commission.
