For YCM’s Boris Herrmann it’s his first crack at this iconic race in his career. Aboard Malizia-Seaexplorer it will be a unique experience for the sailor and his crew comprising Will Harris(co-skipper), Rosalin Kuiper, Nicolas Lunven, Yann Eliès, Axelle Pillain and Antoine Auriol (on board reporter). Having left the yard last July, the brand new 60-footer already has a taste for offshore having competed in the Route du Rhum. “The sensations on this boat are completely different. It’s slightly heavier with a slight banana-shape to the hull that entails a different approach to navigation. It’s also higher which means more space inside and that improves quality of life for all on board,” says Pierre Casiraghi, YCM Vice-President and founder of Team Malizia. “The boat’s designed for the Vendée Globe, so solo sailing, but also with crew for The Ocean Race. It also has many more sensors and electronics. I think Boris and Team Malizia will do very well in this race. He has a lot of experience sailing all over the world with many different teams and boats, whether as crew on Maserati (MOD70) or racing with Francis Joyon on Idec (Ultime) among others.” After damage incurred during the recent Route du Rhum, the 60-footer was in the yard to have foils replaced: “We’re trying to work out exactly what happened but it’s not that unusual with such recent foils,” explains Boris Herrmann, “The team did an incredible job and turned the situation round in record time.” The crew on Malizia-Seaexplorer then return to Monaco in time for the 10th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge.

The technical set-back failed to put the brakes on the team’s ambitions as Malizia-Seaexplorer got off to a cracking start, winning the first In-Port race (Alicante) on 8th January a week before the start.

Launched 1973 and held every three years since 1988, it is the first time the high tech, foiling, nearly flying IMOCA boats will be competing. Nine stage cities are on the programme for the next six months. The first stage is a 1,900 nautical mile sprint to Cape Verde, a first stop that will allow competitors to focus on sustainability issues at the famous Ocean Week, a cause dear to the hearts of the crew on Malizia-Seaexplorer and the Yacht Club de Monaco.

Starting 25th January, Leg 2 sees the fleet head to Cape Town, South Africa, before setting sail again for a recordbreaking distance to Itajaí in Brazil. At 12,750 nautical miles, it’s the longest leg in the event’s history and takes the IMOCAs and VO65s into the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties of the Southern Ocean. With the Antarctic to starboard, the fleet need to pass all three of the great southern capes – Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Horn – to port and without stopping. From there they head north, through the doldrums again to Newport, Rhode Island, on the east coast of the United States, before returning to Europe with a transatlantic leg to Aarhus, Denmark, followed by a fly-by of Kiel, Germany, before a stop in The Hague in The Netherlands. Then it’s the Grand Finale leg to Genova, Italy, with first arrivals expected 1st July 2023.

The call comes amid spiking energy prices, an energy supply crisis and fast accelerating climate change, which together pose major challenges for companies, economies and societies around the globe. These challenges form the backdrop for the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, from 16-20 January, which senior Schneider Electric executives will attend.

Alongside electrification, delivering increased efficiency across existing infrastructure through digitization and automation will be among the most important levers in the next decade, being the fastest and most capital-efficient means for many organizations to reduce emissions.

A further recent Schneider Electric report on the EU’s electrification potential found that focusing on sectors in which electrification is both feasible and attractive could raise electricity’s share of the energy mix from around 20% to 50%. In turn, the share of natural gas and oil would drop by around 50%, contributing significantly to improved energy security. Move Over Ben Franklin: Laser Lightning Rod Electrifies Scientists

When Benjamin Franklin fashioned the first lightning rod in the 1750s following his famous experiment flying a kite with a key attached during a thunderstorm, the American inventor had no way of knowing this would remain the state of the art for centuries.

Scientists now are moving to improve on that 18th-century innovation with 21st-century technology — a system employing a high-powered laser that may revolutionize lightning protection. Researchers said on Monday they succeeded in using a laser aimed at the sky from atop Mount Santis in northeastern Switzerland to divert lightning strikes.

With further development, this Laser Lightning Rod could safeguard critical infrastructure including power stations, airports, wind farms and launchpads. Lightning inflicts billions of dollars in damage on buildings, communication systems, power lines and electrical equipment annually while also killing thousands of people.

The equipment was hauled to the mountaintop at an altitude of about 8,200 feet (2,500 meters), some parts using a gondola and others by helicopter, and was focused on the sky above a 400-foot-tall (124-meter-tall) transmission tower belonging to telecommunications provider Swisscom SCMN.S, one of Europe’s structures most affected by lightning.

In experiments during two months in 2021, intense laser pulses — 1,000 times per second — were emitted to redirect lightning strikes. All four strikes while the system was active were successfully intercepted. In the first instance, the researchers used two high-speed cameras to record the redirection of the lightning’s path by more than 160 feet (50 meters). Three others were documented with different data.

“We demonstrate for the first time that a laser can be used to guide natural lightning,” said physicist Aurelien Houard of Ecole Polytechnique’s Laboratory of Applied Optics in France, coordinator of the Laser Lightning Rod project and lead author of the research published in the journal Nature Photonics.

Lightning is a high-voltage electrical discharge between a cloud and the ground, within a cloud or between clouds.

“An intense laser can generate on its path long columns of plasmas in the atmosphere with electrons, ions and hot air molecules,” Houard said, referring to positively charged particles called ions and negatively charged particles called electrons.

“We have shown here that these plasma columns can act as a guide for lightning,” Houard added. “It is important because it is the first step toward a laser-based lightning protection that could virtually reach a height of hundreds of meters [yards] or a kilometer [0.6 mile] with sufficient laser energy.”

The laser device is the size of a large car and weighs more than 3 tons. It uses lasers from German industrial machine manufacturing company Trumpf Group. With University of Geneva scientists also playing a key role, the experiments were conducted in collaboration with aerospace company ArianeGroup, a European joint venture between Airbus SE AIR.PA and Safran SA SAF.PA.

This concept, first proposed in the 1970s, has worked in laboratory conditions, but until now not in the field.

Lightning rods, dating back to Franklin’s time, are metal rods atop buildings, connected to the ground with a wire, that conduct electric charges lightning strikes harmlessly into the ground. Their limitations include protecting only a small area.

Houard anticipated that 10 to 15 years more work would be needed before the Laser Lightning Rod can enter common use. One concern is avoiding interference with airplanes in flight. In fact, air traffic in the area was halted when the researchers used the laser.

“Indeed, there is a potential issue using the system with air traffic in the area because the laser could harm the eyes of the pilot if he crosses the laser beam and looks down,” Houard said.

Vietnam: positive signals for rice exports in 2023

Vietnam exported nearly 7.2 million tonnes of rice worth 3.49 billion USD last year, including many shipments navigating demanding markets such as Japan and the European Union (EU).

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said the sales signaled that Vietnamese rice has gained better quality, from choosing varieties for cultivation and standardisation to meet requirements of each market.

Aware of the need to build long-term business strategies, major rice exporters such as Trung An Hi-tech Farming JSC and Loc Troi Group have teamed up with farmers and cooperatives in material zones to generate stable and quality rice supply.

Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Food Association Do Ha Nam said thanks to jasmine and high-quality rice, Vietnam won a number of markets and recorded fast growth in demanding markets such as the US and the EU.

Many firms already received orders until April or even the third quarter of this year.

The VFA forecast that domestic rice exporters have a distinct advantage this year thanks to high rice prices and huge demand from China, the Philippines and Africa.

The Philippines, the biggest importer of Vietnamese rice, has decided to maintain import tax of 35% this year.

Meanwhile, the second Vietnamese rice importer – China – will lift its zero-COVID policy and reopen its borders with Vietnam, Nam said.
