The New Zealand Qualifications Authority and World Education Services Partner on Qualifications Recognition for Migrants with International Education

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, March 30, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and World Education Services (WES) have signed an agreement to streamline qualifications assessment for migrants to New Zealand who hold credentials from another country. Under the agreement, WES will provide qualification verification services to immigration applicants to New Zealand.

The new WES Global Records Verification Report for NZQA is designed to expedite services for individuals who qualify for resident visas under the country’s skilled migrant category. As New Zealand’s designated national education information centre and competent recognition authority, NZQA is instrumental in ensuring that the effort is successful.

Traditional New Year festival expected to lure more visitors to Laos

Boun Pi Mai, the traditional New Year festival in Laos, will be organised on a large scale after three years of COVID-19 in order to attract tourists and recover the national economy.

Vientiane capital city and other Lao localities are working hard to prepare for the festival, to take place in mid-April. Many cities and provinces have also outlined plans to lure domestic and foreign visitors.

In the ancient capital of Luang Prabang, one of the famous tourist destinations in the country, festive activities will last from April 11 to 20, targeting both domestic and foreign holidaymakers, according to local authorities.

The festival is expected to help achieve the target of serving 1.4 million international tourists set by the Lao government this year.

Laos-China cross-border passenger train to be launched on April 13

Laos-China Railway will launch the first cross-border train between Vientiane of Laos and Kunming of China’s Yunnan on April 13.

The launch of the passenger train service was confirmed at a meeting between the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith and Mr Wang Ning, Secretary of Yunnan Provincial Party Committee in Vientiane on Mar 30.

At the meeting, the two sides highly valued the friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.

Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in various fields thus bringing greater benefits two peoples of both sides.

They also discussed possible areas of cooperation for the years to come especially on infrastructure development, the resumption of Laos-China highway.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau’s deep-sea port receives biggest-ever container ship

Gemalink, the largest deep-sea container port in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau’s Cai Mep – Thi Vai seaport complex, has recently received a 24,188 TEU container vessel, the biggest ever of its kind anchored at the port to date.

The ship, M/V OOCL SPAIN, is one of the largest ships in the world and the largest container ship ever to dock at a Vietnamese port. After docking at Gemalink on March 29 and 30 for unloading cargo, it departed for the next destination – Singapore.

Launched on February 16, 2023, the ship, 400m long and 61.3m wide, is on its first voyage on the Asia-North Europe route. The journey is expected to last 84 days visiting a series of ports, including Shanghai, Xiamen, Nansha, Hong Kong, Yantian, Cai Mep-Thi Vai, Singapore, Piraeus, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Zeebrugge, Valencia, Piraeus, Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Shanghai.

James Chou, Managing Director of OOCL Vietnam, said Vietnam, located in the heart of Southeast Asia, has long been a strategic port in OOCL’s service network. The country, one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, has gradually increased its importance in the global supply chain in recent years, he noted.

With its first phase becoming operational in January 2021, Gemalink has so far handled 2 million TEUs of import and export goods.

Japan supports school improvements in Savannakhet and Oudomxay

The Government of Japan is providing grant assistance worth approximately USD 200,000 for two education projects in Savannakhet Province and Oudomxay Province for the benefit of their students through its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The projects support the construction of new school classroom buildings and toilet facilities as well as the provision of school furniture at both Nakapong Lower Secondary School in Savannakhet Province and Nahom Primary School in Oudomxay Province to improve their educational and sanitary environments.

The grant agreements were signed by Mr. Kobayashi Kenichi, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao P.D.R. and representatives of the provincial authorities, witnessed by Ms. Lingthong Sengtavanh, Vice Governor of Savannakhet Province and Mr. Somchith Payasak, Vice Governor of Oudomxay Province.

Speaking on behalf of both provinces, Ms. Lingthong, Savannakhet Vice Governor said that Japan had contributed to the socio-economic development of both provinces in various fields, including education, through both grant aid and technical cooperation, including the dispatch of experts and Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCVs).

“Japan’s effective support, including the enhancement of teacher quality through the improvement of teacher training colleges and the development of math textbooks, are well known in both provinces and throughout the country”, Ms. Lingthong said.

“This generous support at this time is also very important for both provinces to create a safe and secure environment for children to achieve their learning outcomes, in terms of fostering valuable human resources for the future.”

“At Nakapong Lower Secondary School, classes have been held under overcrowded conditions due to insufficiency in classrooms when compared to the number of students. At Nahom Primary School, the existing school building is severely damaged due to aging, with immediate action required to ensure the safety of students and teachers. The number of toilets in both schools is significantly insufficient compared to the number of students, which is a concern for the deterioration of the sanitary environment.” Ambassador Kobayashi said.

“We hope that Japan’s support will improve the learning environment for the generations of students who will grow up to be the future of Laos, as well as improve the working environment for teachers and staff and the sanitary environment of the entire school”, he added.

Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) provides funds for relatively small-scale projects that directly benefit local residents by supporting economic and social development in developing countries including the Lao PDR.

The Government of Japan has provided more than USD 1.02 million to Savannakhet Province and USD 730,000 to Oudomxay Province over the past five years to support education, health, infrastructure, and other areas. In a shared effort to address regional disparities in socio-economic development, Japan will continue to support initiatives to improve the basic standard of living at the grassroots level in the Lao PDR to ensure “no one is left behind”.
