Digital economy likely to contribute 25.5% to Malaysia’s GDP by 2025: Minister

Digital economy is expected to contribute 25.5% to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025, and the country will attract major investments to data centres, innovation, and digital economy in the next few months, said Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said that with the current positive growth of the economy and upcoming investments, Malaysia can achieve the number earlier than expected.

Meanwhile, Vantage Data Centers, a US-based leading global provider of hyper-scale data centre campuses, has announced the development of a second data centre campus in Malaysia with an additional investment of 13.32 billion RM (3 billion USD).

The campus will be Vantage’s largest data centre in Southeast Asia and the region. Meanwhile, Leave A Nest will focus on innovation, problem-solving, and deep technology aspects with an investment of 20 million RM and an expected economic impact of up to 100 million RM.

Fahmi said that such an announcement is a positive signal proving that foreign investors still choose Malaysia as a favourite investment destination.

He said it is important to ensure sustainable investment by expanding the pool of local talent including programmers, animators, and entrepreneurs in the digital economy.

Russia and Cuba to seek concrete actions to revitalize trade

At the 11th Meeting of the Business Committee, held at the National Hotel in Havana, Russia and Cuba today called for concrete actions to revitalize trade between the two countries.

The Meeting was attended by representatives from 52 Russian and 106 Cuban companies, the President of the Cuban Chamber of Commerce Antonio Carricante Corona praised, as he opened the event.

Since celebration in Moscow back in September 2019, the scenario has changed and a more complicated business situation has been faced in recent times, Carricante Corona noted.

Now it is not only a matter of analyzing possibilities of supplies, but also of seeking partnerships for domestic industrial productions, Carricante added.

Every project promoted between both nations is for the economic recovery, that is why it is called to work with creativity, Carricante stated.

The Commercial Representative of the Russian Embassy in Cuba Serguei Baldin, on the other hand, said that in 2022 the bilateral exchange stood at $450 million, in which Russian exports tripled, Carricante stressed.

Baldin suggested to reverse such a situation by using, among others, institutional mechanisms such as the 16 working groups within the Russia-Cuba Business Committee and the nine sectoral groups of businessmen.

Likewise, Boris Titov, commissioner to the head of state for the rights of businessmen and president of the Russian session of the Business Committee of both nations, estimated that commercial relations are going through a new change.

In Titov’s standpoint, great expectations are being opened up, since Cuba is also undergoing a new change with greater support to its entrepreneurship, providing opportunities for cooperation with Russian businessmen.

BFAR-Bicol warns beachgoers vs. jellyfish sting

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Bicol (BFAR-5) has reminded the public to always check with local authorities or residents about any potential dangers before swimming or diving in unfamiliar waters, after the reported proliferation of ‘salabay’ or box jellyfish in the seawaters off Garchitorena and Caramoan towns in Camarines Sur. Rowena Briones, officer in charge of BFAR-5 information unit, said in an interview on Thursday they recommend wearing protective clothing and avoiding prolonged swimming during daytime when jellyfish are known to be more active. “For first aid, when stung by jellyfish, the public is advised to rinse the affected area with vinegar for at least 30 seconds. Vinegar can help neutralize the toxins from the jellyfish and prevent further stinging,” the agency said in a statement. Also recommended were removing any tentacles with tweezers or gloves to prevent further stinging; soaking the affected area in hot water for 20 to 45 minutes, or as long as tolerable; applying a topical cream or ointment, such as hydrocortisone or lidocaine to relieve itching and pain; and taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to further relieve pain and reduce swelling. “It is important to avoid rubbing the affected area, applying freshwater, or using ice as these can worsen the sting and release more toxins,” the advisory added. Seeking immediate medical attention is also advised if the victim displays symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, nausea or chest pain and also if the victim is unaware of the type of jellyfish and if the sting occurred in a sensitive area such as the face or genitals.
