Vietnam Airlines launches Hanoi-Mumbai air route

National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines recently launched a direct air route connecting Hanoi with India’s Mumbai so as to strengthen trade, and socio-cultural connectivity between the two nations.

This is the carrier’s second route connecting Vietnam and India, after New Delhi capital.

Its Deputy General Director Trinh Ngoc Thanh said that with a new route linking to Mumbai, India’s most important financial, commercial and cultural centre, the airline wants to show its commitment to continuously expanding and developing a network of routes, giving passengers many flexible options.

He expressed his hope that the air routes will bring many benefits to both countries.

Vietnam Airlines will operate four flights per week on the Hanoi-Mumbai route on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

To mark the new service, it is offering preferential fares, with a round-trip ticket, including taxes and fees, costing only 199 USD. The prices are applied for tickets purchased until May 26, for flights between May 20 and 26.

ECCP: PH entering ‘golden age’ of investments

The Philippines is entering the ‘golden age’ of investments from Europe as the country remains an attractive destination for European businesses. This, as the government implemented policy reforms such as the amendments to the Foreign Investments Act, Public Service Act, and Retail Trade and Liberalization Act, as well as allowing full foreign ownership for renewable energy projects. “The Philippines is really starting to enter this golden age of investments coming from European and from other parts of the world,” European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) executive director Florian Gottein said in a press conference in Makati City Monday. Gottein said the ECCP has been a staunch advocate of the policy measures that will help the Philippines attract more foreign direct investments. Showing the growing interest of European firms in the Philippines, EU-ASEAN Business Council (EU-ABC) executive director Chris Humphrey said one of the biggest European business delegations will be arriving here this week to participate in the 2023 European-Philippines Business Dialogue. Humphrey said the European delegation will be composed of 36 entities with 70 people. “I think that just emphasizes the attraction and the importance of the Philippines to European industry… We need to take the Philippines at the center stage,” he said. Humphrey cited the country’s strong economic growth, which is one of the fastest in Asia despite its slowdown, its large and young population, and the stability it offers make the Philippines a strategic destination for European businesses. “The reality on the ground here is much more positive than elsewhere in the region. So if you look somewhere like Indonesia, they’re going to have election next year that will cause some instability. Malaysia had big political problems. It’s unclear whether the government will survive this full term as well… You go somewhere like Thailand where we just had an election. The future is looking a bit uncertain at the moment. They’ve also got a very older population,” he added. Vietnam, on the other hand, is showing signs of economic slowdown with its gross domestic product growth easing to 3.2 percent in the first quarter of 2023 from 5.05 percent expansion in the first quarter 2022. “You’ve got an administration with another five years to go. It’s very stable and very progressive. And you’ve got a great, young, highly intelligent, well-skilled workforce. You have the language skill as well. You just need to make sure you’re leveraging on the advances you have now whilst the rest of the region is facing some difficulties,” Humphrey said. ECPP president Lars Wittig said one of the areas that the Philippines needs to further improve is the ease of doing business to get a bigger share of European investments in the region. “Europe is the largest single investor (in ASEAN), accumulated USD350 billion. Unfortunately, historically, only 4.7 percent of that has been invested directly into the Philippines,” Wittig said. Meanwhile, the ECCP and the EU-ABC will be holding the 10th European-Philippine Business Dialogue on May 25 at Dusit Thani Manila, also in Makati. Aside from featuring a series of high-level discussions, ECCP’s 11 advocacy papers will be launched during the program and will be handed over to the administration.

Naval Forces Central aids passengers in Cebu ships’ collision

Units from the Philippine Navy’s Naval Forces Central (NFC) came to the rescue of passengers of a fast craft that collided with a cargo vessel after suffering a “steering casualty” while transiting along Mactan Channel on Sunday afternoon. SuperCat commercial vessel St. M/V Jhudiel collided with LCT Poseidon 23 at around 2:53 p.m. near the First Cebu-Mactan (Osmeña Jr.) Bridge. NFC acting assistant public affairs office chief Lt. Jr. Grade Abigail Jean Laturnas, in a statement Monday, said they were involved after Naval Task Force 50 deployed BRP Enrique Jurado and the 5th Patrol Boat Division to provide rescue and assistance. “The immediate response of PC-371 together with the 5th PB (Patrol Boat) Division to the said distressed vessels resulted in the safe transfer of 28 passengers to Captain Veloso Pier, NBRR (Naval Base Rafael Ramos) Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu wherein they received first aid treatment from personnel of BRP Batak (LC-299),” she said. Medical personnel from Naval Base Rafael Ramos then took the rescued passengers to their medical dispensary for further treatment and check-up. Laturnas said six of the passengers were later transferred to Mactan Doctors Hospital while the other 22 passengers were escorted to Pier 1 in Cebu City. “Likewise, PC-371 together with a civilian tugboat T/B Fortis escorted Supercat St. Jhudiel carrying the remaining 169 passengers and 13 crew members enroute to Pier 1, Cebu City,” Laturnas said. Investigation conducted by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said M/V St. Jhudiel departed Ormoc City, Leyte with 197 passengers, bound for Cebu City. While underway, the ship experienced steering casualty and engine failure, causing it to collide with LCT Poseidon 23, which was on its way to Ormoc City from Mandaue City. LCT Poseidon 23 was carrying 17 rolling cargoes and 20 drivers/cargo helpers at the time of the mishap. It immediately returned to its port of origin, Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City. “As per M/V St. Jhudiel’s master, 25 passengers suffered minor injuries,” the PCG added. The PCG immediately deployed a floating asset, a land vehicle, and an ambulance to provide necessary assistance. In an interview, Commander Mark Larsen Mariano, chief of Coast Guard Station Central Cebu, said the initial report said 35 passengers of the fast craft were brought to a hospital in Mandaue City while six received medical attention at the Naval Forces Central (Navforcen) in Lapu-Lapu City. ‘We were able to deploy our floating assets to rescue the passengers. Our ambulance provided necessary medical attention to the injured passengers,’ Mariano told the Philippine News Agency. As of 3 p.m. Monday, the masters of the two vessels have not filed their marine protest. However, Mariano said that based on their initial investigation, MV St. Jhudiel experienced a steering wheel anomaly while traveling from Ormoc City. MV St. Jhudiel suffered damage at its front starboard side but no oil spill occurred since the rupture was above water. ‘We deployed our Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Force-Central Visayas to conduct an oil spill evaluation,’ he added. SuperCat said it ‘apologizes for the harm and inconvenience caused by the recent accident.’ The company said they are now ‘conducting a thorough investigation on the incident with proper government agencies, and that additional safety measures and appropriate actions shall be undertaken to avoid recurrence of this unfortunate incident.’ It pledged ‘to ensure that all those who sustained injuries are properly cared for.’ ‘Additional safety measures and appropriate actions shall be undertaken to avoid (the) recurrence of this unfortunate incident,’ the company added. NCRPO probes NPD anti-drug unit office attack

The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) will investigate the strafing and grenade attack on the office of the Northern Police District – Drug Enforcement Unit (NDP – DEU) and gave the Caloocan City Police Station one week to close the case. ‘Bagama’t walang nasugatan sa nasabing insidente, importanteng malaman natin kung sino ang may kagagawan nito at kung ano ang kanilang motibo (Although no one was injured in the incident, these people should be immediately identified and be held accountable for what they did),’ NCRPO chief, Maj. Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo, said in a statement on Monday. Okubo said he is personally monitoring the case, adding that local police forces were already instructed to conduct operations to arrest the perpetrators and continue the aggressive anti-illegal drugs operations and crime prevention measures. Reports said the grenade was lobbed by two motorcycle-riding men in front of the NPD – DEU at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group North Metro Manila District Field Unit in Caloocan in the early hours of Saturday. No one was hurt but the attack damaged at least two cars parked near the site. Okubo also ordered the relief of NPD – DDEU chief Lt. Col. Michael Chavez, assistant chief Maj. Dennis Odtuhan and Substation 4 commander Capt. Ivan Rinquejo to pave the way for a thorough investigation. ‘Hindi natin pahihintulutan ang mga indibidwal na ito na magdulot ng sakuna laban sa kaligtasan at seguridad lalo na sa ating mga nasasakupan. Sa pagkakataong ito, hinihimok ko ang ating kababayan na makipagtulungan sa inyong kapulisan. Anumang impormasyon ang inyong maibibigay ay malaking tulong sa agarang pagkakalutas at pagkakahuli ng mga taong may kinalaman dito (We will not allow these individuals to cause disaster against the safety and security of our constituents. This time, I urge our countrymen to cooperate with your police. Any information you can provide will be of great help in the immediate resolution and arrest of the people involved),’ Okubo stressed.
