Biodiversity Data from NORI-D Exploration Area Now Available on UNESCO’s Ocean Biodiversity Information System, Increases Biodiversity Records for the Clarion-Clipperton Zone by About 150%

Assessing deep-sea biodiversity

A scientist inspects organisms collected during one of NORI’s 17 offshore environmental research campaigns as part of its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

  • Following the publication of biodiversity data collected from the NORI-D exploration area on UNESCO’s Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS) on 22 June 2023, The Metals Company’s subsidiary NORI becomes the single largest contributor of biological occurrence data to the OBIS ISA-node, increasing biodiversity records available for the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) by about 150%.
  • NORI data now available on the OBIS ISA-node represents less than half of the total dataset collected to date, with the remaining baseline biological data currently being collated and further submissions expected in the coming months to ISA DeepData and the OBIS ISA-node.
  • The ISA-node provides access to a wealth of information on the deep-sea and biological resources in the global commons for all society to use. In a week since the publication on OBIS, the NORI-D biodiversity records have been downloaded 67 times, and the total number of occurrence records downloaded exceeds 4.4 million.
  • The complete NORI-D dataset is expected to be one of the most comprehensive datasets ever gathered in the deep-sea and will form the basis of NORI’s Environmental Impact Statement, an integral part of the application to the International Seabed Authority for an exploitation contract in NORI-D area.

NEW YORK, July 03, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TMC the metals company Inc. (Nasdaq: TMC) (“TMC” or the “Company”), an explorer of the world’s largest estimated undeveloped source of critical battery metals, today announced that data submitted by its subsidiary NORI to the International Seabed Authority’s ‘DeepData’ platform in March 2023 has now been made available to the public via UNESCO’s Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS), increasing the biodiversity occurrence records contained within the OBIS ISA node for the Clarion Clipperton Zone by about 150%.

As the first UN body to become a member of the OBIS network, the ISA publishes biodiversity data collected by contractors and submitted to its DeepData platform to the OBIS ISA-node. The publication of this initial batch of data to the OBIS ISA node follows NORI’s decade-long research efforts to define the polymetallic nodule resource and develop an environmental baseline for its NORI-D exploration area, as part of its Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the NORI-D Nodule Project. Since 2012, the Company has collaborated with leading industry experts and independent scientists from marine research institutions from around the world on its ESIA, gathering data throughout 17 offshore campaigns, representing over 470 operational research days on the NORI-D area.

Collected using a suite of high-tech equipment, the NORI dataset now available on OBIS includes over 1,400 biological samples from extensive boxcore and multicore sampling, and over 8,000 images analyzed for benthic megafauna captured by Remotely Operated Vehicles from two offshore campaigns. With NORI’s initial ISA submission to DeepData providing a significant expansion to the biological holdings contained within, the upload of this data to OBIS sees NORI becoming the single largest data provider to the OBIS ISA node, providing almost 60% of the records. OBIS holds the world’s largest scientific knowledge base on the diversity, distribution and abundance of all marine organisms.

The NORI dataset is now available for public scrutiny and interrogation. Since its publication on June 22, 2023, records from the NORI dataset have been downloaded 67 times, and the total number of occurrence records downloaded so far exceeds 4.4 million.

Dr Michael Clarke, Environmental Manager at The Metals Company, said: “Through our own research efforts and by sharing our data publicly, we expect that the 3D environment of NORI-D will become one of the most highly-characterized areas of our planet’s oceans. This is just a taste of what’s to come and we look forward to sharing data from additional campaigns, as well as all remaining data concerning ocean geochemistry, bathymetry and pelagic biodiversity with the scientific community once we’ve gone through the labor-intensive process of analyzing this wealth of information.”

Over the coming months, NORI will continue working with research teams to fully collate and categorize the hundreds of terabytes of data and thousands of biological samples that have been collected to date. NORI expects numerous further papers to be published in peer-reviewed journals in the coming months and years, adding significantly to society’s understanding of the deep sea.

Aquatic product exporters hope for recovery in remaining months

Despite a downward trend in aquatic product exports in the first half of 2023, the lower pace of month-on-month decline is giving hopes for a recovery in the remaining months of this year.

In June, aquatic product exports brought home nearly 800 million USD, down 21%. Of which, shrimp exports posted a turnover of 341 million USD, down 18% year on year, marking the lowest decline since the beginning of this year, reported the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The export value of aquatic products hit nearly 4.2 billion USD in the first half of 2023, down over 27% year-on-year.

VASEP’s Communication Director Le Hang attributed the decrease to weak market demand and hikes in the prices of feed, fries and other input expenses, leading to higher production costs. Despite lower selling prices, it remains difficult to find buyers, resulting in increased inventory and escalating costs.

She said inflation in many markets has shown no signs of cooling down, which is hindering the recovery of seafood consumption and imports in the US, the EU, and other regions.

However, several markets like Japan, the Republic of Korea and Australia are still considered promising for Vietnam’s products of strength, particularly high value-added processed aquatic products. Some Southeast Asian markets are also seen as potential due to their stable economies, lower inflation, and geographical advantages, along with tariff benefits from free trade agreements.

Regarding support for enterprises, VASEP recently suggested the Government and relevant ministries and agencies consider reducing lending rates, especially those denominated in the US dollar; extending the maturity of loans and continuing to provide credit lines to enable businesses to maintain the collection of raw materials from farmers and fishermen, as well as processing and storing goods for export in the upcoming quarters.

VASEP also proposed tax authorities expedite the process of VAT refund for exported goods and services, extend the policies on tax exemption and reduction, including land rent and various fees until the end of 2023 to alleviate financial pressures and help businesses overcome the current difficulties./.

More hot days expected this month

Vietnam is likely to experience slightly higher temperatures in July this year with one or two typhoons expected to hit the East Sea, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

There is a possibility of one or two typhoons and tropical depressions in the East Sea that could affect the northern and north central regions of Vietnam, said Nguyen Duc Hoa, deputy head of the Climate Forecast Department at the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

The north central, northern midlands, and central regions are expected to experience more hot days than average days over the next few years.

The northern midlands and north central regions will experience heat waves for around 10-15 days in the first half of July. The heat waves may last longer in the northern and central coastal regions.

The southwest monsoon is likely to cause many days of rain and thunderstorms in the Central Highlands and southern regions. There may be days with heavy thunderstorms and rain in the late afternoon.

Throughout the country, it is necessary to continue monitoring the occurrence of thunderstorms, whirlwinds, lightning, and hail, especially in the northern, Central Highlands, and southern regions, Hoa said.

He added that the average temperature of July this year will be about 0.5 degree Celsius higher than the average of previous years. In the northern and northern central regions, the temperatures may be 0.5-1 degree Celsius higher.

Hoa said due to the impacts of heat waves, especially in the northern and central regions, residents and authorities need to be vigilant against the risk of fires and explosions in residential and production areas due to the increased demand for electricity.

He said there is a high risk of forest fires, especially in the central region.

Dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, whirlwinds, lightning, and hail continue to occur throughout the country, which can significantly impact production and daily activities, Hoa said./.

Party General Secretary chairs Central Military Commission’s session

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who is also Secretary of the Central Military Commission, chaired the commission’s sixth session in Hanoi on July 3 to review the fulfillment of military and national defence tasks, and Party building in the first half of this year, and roll out tasks for the last six months.

At the beginning of the session, Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang announced the Politburo’s decision to appoint President Vo Van Thuong to join the Standing Board of the commission for the 2020-2025 term.

In his remarks, Trong urged the entire army to stay ready and prepare plans in response to non-traditional security challenges, and participate in natural disaster prevention and control, and search and rescue operations, especially in the upcoming storm season.

He also stressed that the army should improve the quality of training and exercise, raise its combat readiness, and maintain its role as the core in building strong all-people defence.

It is necessary ensure logistics services and technologies, and boost the defence industry towards modernity, while improving the quality of international integration and defence diplomacy, he continued.

Regarding Party building in the military, the Party chief laid emphasis on developing a strong contingent of officials who have morality, talents and reputation.

He also urged better performance in the mass mobilisation work, helping people in socio-economic development, natural disaster and disease prevention and control, and joining the building of the political foundation in localities.

It is a must to keep a close watch on localities to coordinate with all-level Party Committees, local authorities and public security force in building safe localities, and preventing “hot spots” and complicated cases, the leader said.

Other tasks included preparing for major national celebrations in 2024, and promoting the information work so that people at home and international friends understand more about the history of the Vietnamese army.

The Party leader noted that policies and guidelines of the Central Military Commission need to be popularised among all officers and soldiers, and called for stronger efforts in the army to achieve all the tasks set for the second half and the whole year.

According to a report presented at the meeting, over the past six months, the Central Ministry Commission, the Ministry of National Defence, and all-level Party Committee instructed the entire army to stay united and overcome challenges to fulfil their tasks.

The army made outstanding performance in both national defence and production, proved its core role in building all-people defence and served as the main force in disaster prevention and control, and search and rescue operations.

International integration and defence diplomacy were carried out actively and flexibly, the report said, noting that the army actively participated in UN peacekeeping operations, humanitarian aid and earthquake relief in Turkey, which has been highly valued by the international community./.
