Cambodia to send 70 soldiers to join 3-nation disaster rescue exercise in Laos

Cambodia will dispatch some 70 soldiers to participate in a three-country disaster rescue exercise in Laos from Sept. 9 to Sept. 16, a senior military official said Friday.

Xinhua News Agency reported on Sept 2 that “It will be the first time that the soldiers of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam jointly conduct a disaster rescue exercise,” General Ith Sarath, deputy commander-in-chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, told reporters.

He said the forthcoming exercise would involve more than 300 Lao soldiers, 70 Cambodian soldiers, and about 120 Vietnamese troops.

Sarath said the joint exercise is designed to strengthen rescue capabilities for soldiers in the three neighboring countries in the event of any floods or storms along the border.

The exercise would further promote cooperation and friendship, and residents along the border of the three countries would benefit from it, he added.
