Japan donates 627 tons of rice to Laos

The Government of Japan has donated 627 tons of rice through the World Food Programme (WFP) to the Lao PDR to help flood victims in Savannakhet and other provinces in southern part of the country.

Savannakhet and other southern provinces were hit by major floods in October 2020.

The aid is expected to benefit 35,000 people in 65 communities in the central and southern provinces of Lao PDR aiming to assist in their long-term rehabilitation and capacity building.

The handover took place on Aug 23 in Vientiane between Japanese Ambassador to Laos Mr Takewaka Keizo and Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Welfare Mr. Lee Pao Yang in the presence of WFP to Laos Director-General Mr. Jan Delbaere, and representatives of other stakeholders.

In February, Japan provided 180 million yen (approximately US$ 1.7 million).

The WFP will provide assistance in rehabilitating flood-affected agricultural infrastructure, and training to help communities better manage such infrastructure, generate more incomes and be prepared for unexpected disasters.
