Laos faces third wave of Covid-19

The Lao PDR is facing the third wave of Covid-19 outbreak with some provinces including Vientiane witnessing a rebound in infections after recording less than 200 new cases a day for almost one month, according to the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.

“Based on lessons from many countries, especially neighbouring countries, it can be predicted that the new wave of Covid-19 will reach its peak in one or two months,” said Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control, Ministry of Health, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh.

Over 400 new daily cases of Covid-19 and three new deaths attributed to the virus have been reported over the past 24 hours with the total reaching 145,507 including 1,680 active cases and 640 deaths.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 225 were reported in Vientiane, 40 in Savannakhet, 24 in Xieng Khuang, 18 in Huaphan, 14 in Vientiane (province), nine in Xaysomboun, and eight in Attapeu.

As of Mar 9, over 5.13 million people, representing 70% of population in the country, have been vaccinated with at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine with over 4.36 million people, 59.52% of the population, given all recommended doses of the vaccine.
