BUTUAN: The government has aided 7,242 rice farmers in the Caraga region with PHP33 million worth of fertilizer discount vouchers (FDVs) from Nov. 20 to Dec. 12 this year, the regional Department of Agriculture (DA-13) office said Tuesday.

‘The fertilizer support is aimed to increase the production of farms planted with hybrid rice from September 2023 to March 2024 dry season,’ DA-13 said in a statement.

FDVs helped the fertilization requirements of some 8,266 hectares of farms in the region devoted to hybrid rice.

The DA-13 said the assistance is given to listed farmers in the Registry System for the Basic Sectors in Agriculture, and encoded in the National Farmers and Fisherfolks Information System.

Of the total number of FDV farmer-beneficiaries, 1,342 are from Agusan del Norte, 2,868 from Agusan del Sur, 1,445 from Surigao del Sur, 1,363 from Surigao del Norte and 224 from Dinagat Islands.

‘The support is part of the DA’s Masagana Rice Industry Development Program that enables our rice farmers to sup

Bacolod City seeks DOT funding for plaza, gov’t center upgrade

BACOLOD: The city government has sought a PHP300-million funding from the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) for the improvement of the facilities at the public plaza and Government Center here.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said on Tuesday they have requested PHP80 million for the installation of a water fountain at the plaza and PHP220 million for the renovation of the Bacolod City Government Center grounds.

‘We have sent a request, we are expecting that they will ask more details. I will just follow it up,’ he said.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution requesting for the proposed funding for the two projects to boost tourism in this city.

‘Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco required us to send a letter with regards to the construction of the fountains in the plaza and the Government Center,’ Councilor Jason Villarosa, chairman of the committee on tourism, said.

Benitez proposed the necessary renovations to both city landmarks dur
ing Frasco’s visit to the city for the launching of The Philippine Experience: Culture, Heritage, and Arts Program on Nov. 29.

He said that once the public plaza is improved and upgraded, he is thinking of converting it into a destination similar to those that can be found in countries like Japan and Singapore.

‘The concept is similar to teamLab (international art collective) which uses light and music to highlight the serenity and comfort of people visiting the place. If we do that in the plaza, then you can just imagine how people will appreciate it and go there,’ he added.

Indonesian minister urges youngsters to participate in energy transition process

Jakarta: Young generation plays an important role in the energy transition process in Indonesia as well as the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN), Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana, has said.

Speaking at the ASEAN Golden Generation Conference: Synergy for the World held recently in Bandung city, West Java province, Kusdiana said that young people are expected to help popularise the importance of direct participation in new renewable energy (EBT) development, create technological innovations in the EBT sector or maybe even participate in the development of startups by taking advantage of local energy potential.

He acknowledged that Indonesia is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Indonesia experienced an annual temperature rise of about 0.03 degree Celsius between 1981 and 2018.

Climate change cannot be separated from human activities that emit carbon, therefore, Indonesia emphasises promoting renewable energy developm
ent and reducing energy sector emissions to reduce carbon emissions.

According to Kusdiana, Indonesia has opportunities in terms of renewable energy, but they haven’t yet been fully exploited. Thus, he called for boosting collaboration between the government and academia, including representatives from universities and research institutes to support the governments of Southeast Asian countries in general and Indonesia in particular to optimise EBT development in the region.

Organised by Kappija21, an organisation of alumni of the Japan-ASEAN Youth Friendship Programme for the 21st Century and the Training Programme For Young Leaders, the event brought together 150 students from 35 universities in Indonesia and several ASEAN countries./
