New York, Nov. 02, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Open Society Foundations today named Natalie Samarasinghe as their first global director of advocacy, as part of their drive to speak with a powerful international voice for justice, equity, and free expression.
Samarasinghe joins Open Society with more than 15 years of advocacy and management experience, most recently as CEO of the United Nations Association-UK. She will assume her new role on January 18, 2022.
“Natalie is a respected thought leader on the subjects of human rights, multilateralism, and civil society. She is well-positioned to build a powerful global advocacy department that magnifies our impact,” said Mark Malloch-Brown, president of Open Society Foundations.
Samarasinghe transformed the United Nations Association-UK into a global innovator and campaigner on UN issues with over 120 branches and 1,000 civil society partners worldwide. There, she advised NGOs and governments on advocacy strategies, and was one of the co-founders of both the 1 for 7 Billion campaign for transparency in international appointments, and the Together First movement for inclusive global governance. Samarasinghe also worked for the United Nations in the office of the President of General Assembly, and as chief of strategy for the organization’s 75th anniversary initiative.
Samarasinghe has also advised governments on UN policy, and supported NGOs such as the Sri Lanka Campaign and Brazilian Igarapé Institute.
“I look forward to helping lead the Foundations’ advocacy priorities and being part of an impressive legacy that continues to shape laws, policies, practices, and attitudes in support of open society,” said Samarasinghe.

Over the past 24 hours, Laos has confirmed 1,062 new Covid-19 infections, the highest daily infections ever recorded since the first transmission was detected in the country in late March 2020.
The new infections have brought the total to 42,891 including 7,864 active cases, and 73 deaths with three new deaths reported over the previous 24 hours, according to the National Taskforce Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control.
Deputy Director General of the National Centre for Laboratory and Epidemiology, Ministry of Health, Dr Buaphanh Khamphaphongphan told a press conference today that the newly recorded infections were detected among 6,602 people tested for Covid-19 yesterday. The day also witnessed 384 patients discharged from hospital.
Of the new cases, 1,053 were classified as domestic infections and nine as imported transmissions. The imported cases were reported in Xayaboury five and Vientiane three and Champassak one. Meanwhile most of the domestic infections were recorded in Vientiane 517, Luang Namtha 134, Luang Prabang 122, Vientiane (province) 100, Bokeo 53, Champassak 26, Oudomxay 24, Khammuan and Savannakhet 20 each, Xekong 18, Xaysomboun 13, Saravan five and Xieng Khuang one.

Between Oct 26 and 28, thousands of Lao people living in Bangkok, Thailand, were given AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.
The vaccination campaign for the Lao nationals was part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Lao-Thai diplomatic relations.
More than 3,800 Lao people have registered for the Covid-19 vaccine. The second dose of the vaccine will be administered in a couple of weeks’ time, Nov 16-18.
At a launch ceremony, held at SCG Bangsu Station, Bangkok on Oct 26, Ambassador of the Lao PDR to Thailand Seng Soukthivong appreciated Thai medical workers and relevant officials for assisting Lao people in getting access to Covid-19 vaccines.

Some 523,200 doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine procured by the COVAX Facility – a partnership co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the World Health Organization (WHO) were handed over to the Government of the Lao PDR in an official ceremony held in Vientiane on Tuesday.
The new doses of COVID-19 vaccine will help the Lao PDR achieve its 2021 goal of 50 per cent vaccination coverage.
Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune received the aid package from WHO Officer-in-Charge to the Lao PDR Jun Gao in the presence of Deputy Minister of Health Sanong Thongsana, UNICEF Representative to the Lao PDR Pia Rebello Britto and representatives of key development partners.
“The Government of the Lao PDR greatly appreciates the support of the COVAX Facility in procuring these life-saving vaccines for the people of the Lao PDR, beginning with the first shipment of doses supported by the COVAX Facility in early 2021 up until now, and we commend their commitment to ensuring global equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. This new shipment of vaccines will accelerate the efforts to reach 50 per cent of the population in 2021,” said Deputy Prime Minister Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune.
The vaccines will be primarily used for those who are at high risk of severe COVID-19 but have not received all recommended doses yet.
The priority groups include frontline workers including healthcare workers, elderly aged 60 years or above, people with underlying health conditions, pregnant people, and essential workers including school teachers and staff across the country in line with the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan.
“This is another very important moment in the Lao PDR’s COVID-19 response efforts. We are now close to our vaccination target for the end of this year and this new shipment is a great contribution from the COVAX Facility to help us achieve this goal and will enable us to further control community transmission in the Lao PDR. This vaccine is safe and effective in preventing severe disease and death, including against the delta variant,” said WHO Officer-in-Charge to the Lao PDR Jun Gao.
As of Nov 3, more than 6.5 million people have been vaccinated against Covid-19 with 3.3 million people given first doses of Covid-19 vaccine and 2.8 million people administered with second doses.

COVAX is co-led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, WHO and CEPI, working in partnership with UNICEF as well as the World Bank, civil society organizations, manufacturers, and others. COVAX is part of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator, a ground-breaking global collaboration to accelerate development, production, and equitable access to COVID-19 tests, treatments, and vaccines.
The AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured in the Republic of Korea by SK Bioscience Co. Ltd (SK Bio) has been authorised for emergency use by WHO and the Food & Drug Department, Ministry of Health.

The U.S. government has added four foreign technology companies to its restricted companies list, saying they “developed and supplied spyware to foreign governments” and that the spyware was used “to maliciously target government officials, journalists, businesspeople, activists, academics, and embassy workers.”
The State Department accused the companies of “engaging in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States.”
The companies are Israel’s NSO Group and Candiru, Russia’s Positive Technologies, and Singapore’s Computer Security Initiative Consultancy PTE. LTD.
These companies will now face severe restrictions in exporting their products to the U.S., and it will make it difficult for U.S. cybersecurity firms to sell them information that could be useful in developing their products.
“This effort is aimed at improving citizens’ digital security, combating cyber threats, and mitigating unlawful surveillance,” the State Department said.
According to Reuters, both NSO Group and Candiru have been accused of selling their products to authoritarian regimes. NSO said it takes actions to prevent the abuse of its products.
Positive Technologies has been in the crosshairs before, having been sanctioned by the Biden administration for allegedly providing assistance to Russian security forces. The company said it has done nothing wrong.
None of the companies commented on their blacklisting.
