Flooding in southern Thailand affects tens of thousands of people

Bangkok: Thai authorities on December 25 announced that heavy rain over the past two days has caused flooding in the southern provinces of Thailand, affecting tens of thousands of people and disrupting the operation of many roads and railways.

The two provinces of Yala and Narathiwat were hardest hit by the flooding with dozens of communes and districts submerged and many schools closed.

The heavy rain has also caused problems at sea, with at least seven ships sunk in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea since December 22. Thailand’s national railway company said heavy rain also caused track subsidence, halting railway services to the Malaysian border.

Authorities have warned people in the southern provinces to be ready to evacuate if the flooding situation gets worse. Currently, provincial officials are working with local authorities to seek drainage solutions in flooded areas and assess the extent of damage.

The Thai Meteorological Department previously predicted that the northeast monsoon would aff
ect the Gulf of Thailand and the southern region with strong winds. On December 24-25, a low-pressure system strengthened along the Malaysian coast, moved through the southern region of Thailand, and made landfall in the Andaman Sea, causing heavy and very heavy rain in some areas in the southern downstream region.

The department has advised people in those areas to take precautions against sudden flash floods and landslides, especially in mountainous areas near waterways and low-lying areas. In the Gulf of Thailand, waves with a height of 2 to 4 meters are forecast. Vessels operating in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, especially in stormy areas, are advised to exercise caution, while small vessels in the Gulf of Thailand are urged not to head to sea during this period./.

Miss Earth crowned in Vietnamese design

Hanoi: The winner of Miss Earth 2023 beauty pageant, Drita Ziri from Albania, has selected a design by Vietnamese designer Nguyen Minh Tuan for her look in the final night that took place in HCM City on December 22.

The design is a meticulously crafted gown adorned with thousands of sparkling crystals and gemstones on sheer fabric to enhance the wearer’s silhouette. While many contestants in the beauty pageant favoured the green colour, Tuan’s design stood out with its delicate and captivating blend of colours.

Another special thing about the gown is that it was ordered just a few days before the grand finale.

‘Miss Earth Albania had originally chosen a gown for the final night from a Philippine brand, but encountered customs issues just before the competition.

“Two days before the grand finale, the National Director of Miss Earth Albania unexpectedly contacted my team, seeking assistance and personally visited our showroom to select a new outfit. They chose two designs for their beauty queen and requeste
d urgent modifications overnight to meet the deadline,’ Tuan recalled.

‘It was truly remarkable that the gown held such a special significance as it witnessed the crowning moment of Miss Earth 2023,’ he added.

The fashion designer also revealed it was not a new design but was originally ordered by the representative of the Dominican Republic for the Miss Earth 2022 pageant. However, for some reason, it did not make an appearance on stage that year.

Later on, the gown was worn by Miss Grand Singapore 2023, the reigning Miss Peace Singapore, during the Miss Grand 2023 competition held in Vietnam.

The elemental court were crowned in the same event – Yllana Aduana of the Philippines as Miss Earth-Air, Do Th? Lan Anh of Vietnam as Miss Earth-Water, and Cora Bliault of Thailand as Miss Earth-Fire.

The fashion designer, born in 1992, has gained fame not only for his exquisite designs that complement the crowned beauties but also for his readiness to assist contestants who encounter wardrobe mishaps during compe
titions. He was intimately dubbed the ‘designer of beauty contest winners’.

The winning of Miss Earth 2023 in Tuan’s design marks the second time that he has had a winning design in the Big 6 pageants, following the victory of Vietnamese candidate in Miss Grand International 2021, Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien.

Tuan is gradually establishing himself as one of the notable Vietnamese fashion designers leaving a mark on the international beauty pageant stage. In 2023, his designs were present in most of the prestigious beauty pageants, not only the Big 6 but also in various national and international competitions.

His team has been entrusted by many contestants of international pageants held in Vietnam such as Miss Charm, Miss Grand, and Miss Earth, to accompany them on their journey.

Miss Charm included 28 designs by Minh Tuan Couture, while Miss Grand 50 designs. In Miss Earth, 11 designs by Tuan appeared in consecutive rounds of the contest.

‘The continuous succession of these pageants has required the team to w
ork overtime and handle urgent orders. However, everyone strives to satisfy the customers, especially the international beauty queens when they come to Vietnam,’ Tuan said.

He revealed that he was fortunate to have a special collection of 23 designs that have been chosen by beauty queens from all around the world to wear upon their crowning moments this year.

In addition to designs for beauty pageants, Tuan and his team are currently busy preparing for the fashion show Dreams Come True, scheduled to take place at The Grand Ho Tram on January 5, 2024./

Top 10 defining events of global economy in 2023

Hanoi: The slowdown in global economic recovery, rice export restrictions, and COP28’s historic deal to phase out fossil fuels are among the most notable events of the world’s economy in 2023 as selected by the Economic News Department of the Vietnam News Agency.

1. Global economic recovery slows down

The world’s leading financial institutions estimated that this year’s global economic growth will be lower than the increase of 3.3 – 3,5% in 2022 as a result of the ‘financial earthquake’ triggered by the US and Swiss banking crisis, the energy crisis, and the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. The central banks of many countries had to consider hiking interest rates to curb inflation or stopping rate increases to aid economic recovery,

2. ‘Earthquake’ on global financial market

In just three days, from March 10 to 12, Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, two major banks of the US, had to shut down due to liquidity losses when depositors withdrew large sums of money. On May 1, First Republic Bank
became the third in the US to go bankrupt in nearly two months. In Europe, Credit Suisse, the second biggest bank of Sweden, also faced the risk of collapse. Timely financial assistance packages from governments and central banks of countries prevented a widespread banking crisis that might lead to an economic depression.

3. Rice export restrictions, climate change threaten food securityOn July 20, India, the world’s biggest rice exporter, suddenly banned the export of non-basmati white rice. The unexpected nosedive in rice supply from India, climate change impacts, and geo-political conflicts boosted prices of Thai rice – an Asian benchmark, to a 15-year high and encouraged stockpiling in many countries. These factors affected purchasing countries, especially poor ones in Asia and the south of the Sahara. The UK Global Food Security Summit outlined some solutions towards a sustainable and climate-adaptive food system.

4. COP28 reaches historic deal to phase out fossil fuels

The 28th Conference of the Part
ies to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) made a big breakthrough on December 13 when mentioning the ‘transition away from fossil fuels’ in a joint statement for the first time. After almost three decades the UN climate change conference was held, countries reached consensus on gradually transitioning away from fossil fuels so as to reach the target of net zero emissions by 2050.

5. Generative AI applications become year’s phenomenon

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the booming technological trends in 2023 after ChatGPT caused a ‘global fever’ with 100 million users in late January, just two months after its debut. Generative AI has enjoyed a year of gigantic development of functions. This breakthrough technology is revolutionising the ways economic sectors operate, strongly changing the job market, and shaping the future of work.

6. World gold prices break all-time highsWorld gold prices on the December 4 trading session hit a record of 2,152.3 USD p
er ounce, and there haven’t been any signs showing the upward trend will stop. The continuous surge is attributed to escalating geo-political conflicts and high inflation, turning gold into a safe-haven asset. Central banks have purchased an unprecedentedly big amount of gold. The capital inflows into gold have affected markets worldwide, caused declines on stock markets, and prolonged the depreciation of the US dollar.

7. EU imposes carbon tariffs on imports

On October 1, the European Union (EU) began the trial phase of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the first step to impose tariffs on imports from the countries failing to meet environmental standards from 2024. The CBAM is considered an effective tool for encouraging non-European businesses to reduce carbon emissions. Those businesses will loss their competitive edge if they do not cut emissions during the production process to meet the EU’s environmental regulations.

8. Central banks put the brakes on interest rate hikes

On June 14, the
US Federal Reserve (Fed) stopped raising interest rates after 10 consecutive hikes from March 2022. On October 26, the European Central Bank (ECB) also ended its streak of 10 interest rate rises. More positive signals from the job market and inflation were the first grounds for Fed, ECB, and other leading central banks to pause rate increases. The move has supported countries to prevent their currencies from depreciating sharply compared to the US dollar and control foreign-currency debts.

9. EU, US issue unprecedented rules to protect cyberspace for users

On August 25, the EU issued two pieces of legislation to control cyber technology, namely the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act. On October 30, the US President signed the first executive order on AI to prevent risks to national security and economy. This was the first time in history the EU and the US had used rules to tighten control over online content and activities of technology companies. Those legal documents force the companies to apply
new methods to ensure safety in cyberspace.

10. Risk of international transportation crisis posed by attacks on arterial shipping route through Red SeaAttacks by Yemen’s Houthi force against ships in the Red Sea since December 3 has disrupted the transportation of oil and cargo between Asia and Europe. Shipping companies have diverted over 30 billion USD worth of cargo away from the Red Sea, which is an arterial shipping route for about 12% of global trade and also a gateway to the Suez Canal. The attacks have posed a risk of a sea transportation crisis and supply chain disruptions, which may boost oil prices, shipping costs, and inflation./.

Malaysia’s economy to accelerate in 2024: expert

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s GDP will expand by 4-5% next year if macroeconomic stability is ensured, said Shan Saeed, global chief economist at Juwai IQI.

According to the expert, Malaysia has a stable and strong economy thanks to solid macroeconomic foundations. The Southeast Asian country’s economy is in a growth phase despite the potential impact from a number of global challenges such as geopolitical tensions and rising interest rates in developed countries.

Regarding the local currency ringgit (RM), the expert said the exchange rate will fluctuate between 4.17-4.44 RM per USD based on several factors.

Firstly, the US dollar will weaken in 2024 because the US Federal Reserve plans to lower interest rates to stimulate the economy. This will cause the ringgit to appreciate in 2024, he said.

Secondly, higher oil prices will boost the currency as oil is one of Malaysia’s main exports. Thirdly, the tourism industry will support the economy as more tourists visit the country, thereby helping to boost local bus
iness and consumption.

Finally, foreign direct investment (FDI) will flow into Malaysia from many different sources such as China, Singapore, Europe and the US. The expert said that FDI is essential for macroeconomic development because it represents the Malaysian Government’s efforts to ensure the country’s policy stability and growth potential.

Shan held that the Malaysian Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is trying its best to keep the economic momentum going and this is very important for the macroeconomic outlook. The expert also emphasised that consumption and investment are the main drivers of economic growth. Meanwhile, various sectors, such as manufacturing, construction, real estate, technology and energy are attracting active investment both domestically and internationally./.
