Elderly schools as an effort to develop senior programs: BKKBN

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) said that the establishment of an elderly school is an effort to improve the development of senior programs.”To realize healthy, independent, active, productive, and dignified (SMART) elderly, they must consistently receive assistance in the spiritual, intellectual, vocational or hobby, social, physical, and mental health, emotional well-being, and environmental aspects,” acting head of BKKBN Bengkulu Province Zainin noted in his official statement received here Sunday. Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2020 showed the elderly population in the country reached 26.82 million people, or 9.92 percent of Indonesia’s population. Thus, Indonesia is approaching an aging population because the number of elderly people has almost exceeded the 10 percent mark, he said. Meanwhile, in Bengkulu, the number of elderly people amounts to 10.06 percent, or 202,273 people out of 2,010,670 residents. The increase in the elderly population nationally is caused by the health and socio-economic development carried out by the Indonesian government, which increases life expectancy, Zainin said. Considering that more elderly people in Indonesia have a low level of education and economy, the government decided to develop various policies as part of its comprehensive efforts to reduce the elderly’s burden on the family and society by exploring their potential, he remarked. Zainin addressed the fact that the establishment of an elderly school was carried out by the Elderly Family Development Group program (BKL) and aims to prepare the elderly to become smart individuals. In Bengkulu, there are four elderly schools located in Kepahiang, North Bengkulu, and Seluma districts. Meanwhile, the fourth elderly school, which was recently inaugurated on April 13, is located in the Rejang Lebong district, he informed. “The elderly school program also aims to address the challenges of the fast aging process.” “The government is anticipating the aging process, especially to help those who come from low-income families,” he said. In addition, head of Rejang Lebong district Syamsul Effendi hopes that with the increasing number of schools for the elderly, they will become productive in their old age. baca-jugaRelated news: andgtovt formulating policy to ensure independent elderly populationRelated news: Data integration aids in eradicating extreme poverty in elderly: BKKBNRelated news: Eight provinces experiencing population aging: BKKBN

Govt builds mercury-free gold processing facility in Kapuas Hulu

Kapuas Hulu (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has built a small-scale facility (PESK) for processing gold without mercury in Geruguk Village, Boyan Tanjung Sub-district, Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan Province.”We are grateful for the construction of the PESK facility by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. In this way, the Kapuas Hulu local government has contributed to the action of the regional plan for mercury reduction,” Kapuas Hulu district head Fransiskus Diaan said in Putussibau Kapuas Hulu on Saturday. The Kapuas Hulu local government and the director general of waste, hazardous, and toxic materials management at the Ministry of LHK signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and work agreement related to gold processing without mercury in Jakarta on Friday (April 14, 2023). ccording to Diaan, the three largest gold mines in Kapuas Hulu are in Boyan Tanjung, Bunut Hilir, and Bunut Hulu Sub-districts. Kehatilab consultant team has also conducted environmental studies in three villages, which are part of the largest community mining clusters in Boyan Tanjung sub-district, namely Teluk Geruguk, Nanga Boyan, and Landau MentailVillages. With gold mining activities currently taking place in the area, Diaan expressed concern over the possibility of environmental pollution in the future due to the use of chemicals and the waste generated during the mining process. He said, in the past, gold mining activities were done manually, using equipment such as hoes and traditional gold pans, which were done on the mainland, but now, gold mining is being done on the banks of rivers and even in the middle of rivers using driftwood and suction machines or pumps. “The results of testing environmental samples is very important information for us to find out the environmental conditions of gold mining in our area so that it becomes a material for our consideration in monitoring and coaching miners in the area,” he said. Therefore, it is hoped that the community will take advantage of the PESK facility built by the Ministry of LHK, which aims to reduce the risk of chemicals in the hope that gold mining activities would not involve the use of mercury. baca-jugaRelated news: West Sumatra police’s special team formed to examine mining permitsRelated news: Support govt policy to check illegal tin mining: DPR

Azurin challenged to tell all about P6.7-B shabu ‘cover-up’

Senator Ronald Dela Rosa on Sunday urged Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. to disclose everything he knows regarding the involvement of police officers, including two generals, in the alleged coverup of the PHP6.7 billion shabu bust in Tondo, Manila last year. ‘Sana sabihin niya (Gen. Azurin) ang lahat ng nalalaman niya tungkol sa halos isang toneladang shabu (I hope he would tell all what he knows about the almost one ton of shabu),’ Dela Rosa said in a radio interview over DZBB. ‘Ang advice ko sa kanya is humarap sa media, ilahad niya ang lahat ng kanyang nalalaman and that will put everything to rest. At ‘yung mga haka-haka, speculation about cover-up, mahihinto ‘yan pag siya nagsalita. Because he is the final say sa organization na ‘yan, siya ang head ng ahensiya, so dapat na siyang magsalita para malaman ng lahat, para matapos na ang lahat ng ispekulasyon (My advice to him is to face the media, reveal everything he knows and that will put everything to rest. And the speculations about the cover-up, that will stop once he speaks. Because he is the final say in that organization, he is the head of the agency, so he should speak so that everyone will know. It will end all speculations),’ he added. Dela Rosa, Azurin’s upperclassman at the Philippine Military Academy and the first PNP chief of the Duterte administration said they would meet when he visits Camp Crame Monday morning. The senator will be the PNP’s guest during the flag-raising ceremony. Azurin promised to break his silence on the alleged attempt of PNP top officials to cover up the arrest of dismissed Master Sgt. Rodolfo Mayo Jr., tagged in the shabu haul in October 2022. Col. Redrico Maranan, PNP spokesperson, said Azurin would give a public statement once all reports surrounding Mayo’s arrest come in. Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos has named 11 officials, including two-star generals, allegedly covering up the arrest of Mayo. Dela Rosa likewise advised the officials in the controversy to seek comfort from their wives. ‘Ang advice ko sa kanila, puntahan nyo ang asawa nyo. Doon ninyo iiyak ang lahat ng sama ng loob Ninyo, sa asawa nyo. Ako, noon, ganon din ang sitwasyon ko. Wala akong ibang iniiyakan tuwing gabi kundi ang asawa ko. Kung wala kayong kasalanan, wala kayong dapat katakutan (My advice to them is, go see your wives. Cry all your troubles to your wives. This is what I did when I was in that same situation. I cry to no one else every night but my wife. If you did nothing wrong, then you have nothing to fear),’ he said. The senator lauded Abalos for policing the PNP and advised him to file charges against erring members of the agency. Dela Rosa said the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs that he heads would immediately conduct the investigation once Resolution No. 564 filed by Senator Ramon Revilla Jr. is referred to the body. Revilla sought a probe to uncover the truth behind Mayo’s arrest and release, allegedly with the approval of top PNP officials. The PNP welcomed the move of Revilla as it would give them an opportunity to explain. Swift and thorough House Speaker Martin Romualdez said the investigation into the shabu haul must be swift and thorough. ‘Let the ax fall where it must because police involvement in this alleged cover-up, especially anti-drug operatives, cannot and should not be tolerated,’ Romualdez said in a statement on Sunday. He expressed dismay that those accused of alleged involvement are ‘the very same people tasked to go after peddlers of illegal drugs.’ ‘But while an in-depth investigation to ascertain the truth is being undertaken, measures to reorganize the police force’s drug unit should be implemented,’ he said. Demoralization rocks PNP ranks At a press briefing in Camp Crame also on Sunday, a high-ranking official admitted the PNP is suffering from demoralization. ‘Very obvious (the demoralization among PNP personnel). Sa tagal naming iniingatan ang aming uniporme, inaasahan namin na may mga ganitong pangyayari (For as long as we have been keeping our uniforms, we expect such incidents to happen) but it’s a matter of perception,’ PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management Director, Maj. Gen. Eliseo Cruz, told reporters. On Saturday, 49 policemen, including Brig. Gen. Narciso Domingo, have been recommended to face criminal and administrative cases in connection with the 990-kilogram shabu haul. Cruz said Domingo, who was relieved from his post as PNP-Drug Enforcement Group (PDEG) chief, has been assigned to the Office of the Chief PNP. He said it puzzles him why top officers get into such a controversy, and what daunts them is when they file complaints against their colleagues. ‘Hindi talaga biro pero ito nga ‘yung aming pinili naming trabaho at eto lang ‘yung alam naming trabaho pero (It’s not a joke but this is the job we have chosen and this is the only job we know but) for every offense committed by our own personnel, we are the complainants. Kami ang dapat magrereklamo. Hindi pupuwedeng wala kaming pakialam kasi kami ito eh. Kami ang bumubuo ng PNP at kami ngayon ang matagal na sa PNP although ito lang ang alam naming trabaho (We are the ones who should complain. We can’t be indifferent because this is us. We are the ones who form the PNP and we have been in the PNP for a long time, although this is the only job we know). It really affects the morale of our organization so we, as senior officers, we encourage our men to continue with our daily jobs,’ he added. Cruz said the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) 990 conducted 21 case conferences that ended March 31. Copies of the report have been sent to Azurin and the National Police Commission. The SITG also recommended continued case build-ups by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to further strengthen the criminal charges that will be filed; that CIDG and the intelligence group locate other dangerous drugs taken away by the Special Operations Unit 4A and Intel and Foreign Liaison Division; the immediate relief of other PDEG personnel involved and to relegate them to purely administrative functions like sentinel/honor guard duties; that all PDEG personnel undergo Squad Weekly Interactive Meeting once a week to maintain strong relationship with fellow personnel and to provide continuous guidance; strengthening the vetting process of personnel to be assigned to PDEG; and financial investigation and lifestyle checks on PDEG personnel every six months.

Senate probe on NegOr killings, Degamo slay begins Monday

The Senate will present relatives of victims and witnesses to killings in Negros Oriental, including the widow of Governor Roel Degamo, in Monday’s hearing of the Committee on Public Order and Illegal Drugs. It has yet to be decided whether Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr., the alleged mastermind in the assassination of Degamo and eight others on March 4, will be accommodated via videoconference after Pamplona town Mayor Janice Degamo, the governor’s wife, requested the Senate not to. Teves has yet to return to the country despite the expiry of his personal travel authority on March 9. He is suspended for 60 days until May 22, with House Speaker Martin Romualdez acting as caretaker of his district. In a radio interview on Sunday, committee chair Senator Ronald Dela Rosa said he is expecting ‘explosive’ revelations from about 30 resource persons. ‘Maraming pasabog ang mga resource person na may alam sa mga (Lots of vital information are expected from the resource persons who have knowledge about) previous killing,’ Dela Rosa said. Mayor Degamo, who flew out of Dumaguete City on Saturday afternoon with about 40 others, asked the Senate not to allow Teves’ remote testimony. ‘Allowing some participants to attend through Zoom/teleconferencing undermines the value and importance of our presence in the hearing, and it is unfair to those who will be attending personally,’ Mayor Degamo said in her letter. Mayor Degamo said some in her entourage will also attend the preliminary investigation of the Department of Justice.
