Indonesia calls for Czech investment in new capital

The Indonesian government has called on Czech investors to join developing environmentally friendly mass transportation in the future capital of Nusantara.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo made the call while receiving Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala at Bogor Presidential Palace in West Java province on April 18.

Speaking at a joint press conference, Widodo lauded the initiative of Fiala to bring a number of representatives of Czech companies during his visit to Indonesia, which showed the commitment of the Czech government to building and strengthening cooperation with Indonesia.

For his part, Fiala welcomed Widodo’s invitation to Czech businesses to invest in Nusantara, saying that the project is really ambitious and he is looking forward to further presentations regarding this project in the near future.

He also noted that a number of Czech companies have shown interest in taking part in the development of Nusantara, such as providing smart and green technologies.

At the press conference, Widodo also emphasised the need to accelerate the completion of negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Indonesia and the European Union (EU).

Launched on July 18, 2016, the EU-Indonesia CEPA negotiations entered the 13th round in Bali in February 2023, focusing on issues related to patents, trademarks, designs and copyright./.

Lao economy to grow by 4% in 2023: IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted that Laos’s economy will grow by 4% this year and in 2024, thanks to neighbouring countries’ reopening of borders and removal of travel restrictions.

In its April World Economic Outlook, the IMF said that despite worldwide economic uncertainty, Laos is likely to see economic growth as its main trading partners, including China, have reopened their borders.

The reopening and growth of its economy will likely generate positive spillovers, with even greater spillovers for countries with stronger trade links and reliance on Chinese tourism, the report said.

The IMF has foreseen a higher economic growth prospect for emerging markets in developing Asia compared to more advanced economies, and the global economy as a whole is expected to see slower growth as well.

Earlier, the Lao Statistics Bureau also reported that the country’s annual inflation rate decreased slightly from 41.3% in February to 41% in March. This is the first time that the inflation rate in Laos has gone down after more than a year of continuous increase.
