Rocket debris recovered in Bataan

A fisherman found what is believed to be a rocket debris floating in the open sea in Bataan this week, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Friday. The PCG said Alvin Menez, a local fisherman, spotted a floating object on June 5, approximately 10 miles off Napot Point, Barangay Nagbalayong in Morong, Bataan. “The fishermen towed the metal object using their motorized fishing banca all the way until they reached the shoreline at Sitio Samuyao, Barangay Mabayo, Morong, Bataan at about 5 p.m.,” the Coast Guard said. The debris has Chinese characters imprinted on it. The PCG Station Bataan is in possession of the recovered debris for investigation and proper disposition. Last month, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) warned pilots and seafarers about possible debris from a rocket launch by China. CAAP said China’s Long March 7 rocket was launched from Wenchang while PhilSA said the debris may float or wash ashore to nearby coasts of Bajo de Masinloc in Zambales. Late last year, several metal debris were similarly found off Pag-asa Island in Palawan and Occidental Mindoro provinces which officials said were likely to be parts of a Chinese rocket.

Party official reaffirms Vietnam’s solidarity with Cuba

Politburo member and permanent member of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee’s Secretariat Truong Thi Mai has reaffirmed the Vietnamese Party and State’s consistent policy of supporting solidarity with the just revolutionary cause and heroic struggle of the Communist Party and people of Cuba.

During a reception in Hanoi on June 9 for member of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) Central Committee and First Secretary of the Havana Party Committee Luis Antonio Torres Iríbar, Mai expressed readiness to share experience and provide practical support for Cuban people within her ability.

She suggested the Party Committees of Hanoi and Havana work closely together and direct agencies concerned to turn plans into specific actions for the successful implementation of the recently-signed cooperation agreement for the 2023-2028 period, especially in areas of their strength such as agriculture, urban construction and planning, health care, tourism, industrial park management, foreign investment attraction and digital transformation.

Thailand unveils plans for tourism growth

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has unveiled its direction for fiscal 2024 with a budget of 5 billion THB (144.2 million USD), which intends to grow off-peak customers, increase spending per trip by 7%, and distribute income to a greater variety of destinations.

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said fairness in revenue distribution through a “sharing economy” and making Thailand a “Tourism for All” destination will be key strategies for the next fiscal year when it starts in October this year.

The TAT expects Thailand’s tourism revenue next year to fully recover to the 2019 level of 3 trillion THB. However, Yuthasak said the TAT hopes to see better distribution of tourists to secondary provinces and improved dispersal of tourists from high season to the whole year.

He said lessons learned from the pandemic helped the TAT formulate a new plan for next year as well as implement crisis management for possible contingencies in the future, the Bangkok Post reported.

According to Yuthasak, the industry should build “tourism security” to make itself resilient through a four-step development combining the public and private sectors. The first measure involves strengthening the supply chain by deciding which products and services must be upgraded to match demand, while local communities should be developed to receive a greater amount of tourists through more distribution channels.

Support and infrastructure for tourist services must be built to improve their safety and ease of travel while in Thailand, he said, adding that it is essential for the country to adopt safety standards that apply to all segments, especially for people with disabilities.

Enhancing the digital transformation can help to maximise tourism revenue, said Yuthasak.

He said that factors such as natural disasters, a pandemic, or a global recession are out of the industry’s control, so regulators should prepare for external risks by installing management plans.

The TAT is scheduled to discuss the implementation of the 2024 plan during its annual meeting from July 11-13 in Pattaya./.

Philippines evacuates thousands amid volcano eruption threats

Philippine officials on June 9 began evacuating some 10,000 residents living around the country’s most active volcano amid threats of an eruption.

Mayon Volcano generated pyroclastic density currents or hot flows of ash and debris as lava domes at the summit collapsed, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Mayon is at alert Level 3, meaning that it is currently in a relatively high level of unrest as magma is at the crater and hazardous eruption is possible within weeks or even days, the advisory said.

According to the Albay province information office, about 2,400 families or 10,000 residents will have to evacuate the danger zone.

Mount Mayon is situated in the eastern province of Albay, some 330 km south of Manila capital city. Known for its perfect cone shape, it has been a famous tourist site.

The Philippines is part of the so-called “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, where volcanic activity and earthquakes remain common.

In 1991, the eruption of Mount Pinatubo, around 100 km northwest of Manila, left more than 800 people dead./.
