Deputy Foreign Minister hails Hungary for considering Vietnam priority partner

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang has hailed Hungary for considering Vietnam a priority partner in its policy of strengthening and expanding ties with Southeast Asian nations.

She made the praise while co-chairing a political consultation with Deputy State Secretary for External Economic Affairs of Hungary Bihari Katalin and holding a working session with Minister of State at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Sztaray Péter on June 8.

Both sides hailed the growing traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Hungary over the past more than seven decades. They expressed their delight at holding the political consultation at a time when the two countries celebrate the fifth anniversary of their comprehensive partnership.

Hang affirmed that Vietnam always values and wishes to strengthen multifaceted cooperation with Hungary, a traditional and sole comprehensive partner of Vietnam in the Central-Eastern Europe.

On the occasion, she thanked the Hungarian Government and people for their timely supply of vaccines and medical equipment to Vietnam, contributing to Vietnam’s success in combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking highly of socio-economic achievements that Vietnam has made in recent years, as well as its role and position in the region and the world, the Hungarian side affirmed that Vietnam is always a priority partner in Hungary’s “Look East” policy.

The two sides vowed to further facilitate the exchange of delegations at all levels, particularly those at high level, and maintain the effectiveness of consultation mechanisms between the two foreign ministries to strengthen political trust and mutual understanding. This serves as a foundation to extend joint work across the board.

They expressed their satisfaction with the positive developments in bilateral trade cooperation, with two-way reaching 1.2 billion USD in 2022, nearly doubling that in 2018 when the two countries upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive partnership.

The two officials also agreed to boost bilateral trade cooperation through fully and effectively implementing the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), improving the effectiveness of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation, creating favourable conditions for each other’s goods in their respective markets, and encouraging Hungarian firms to increase investments in Vietnam, especially in fields of Hungary’s strength such as pharmaceuticals, animal husbandry, food processing and renewable energy.

The Vietnamese deputy minister thanked Hungary for being one of the first EU member states to ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). She suggested Hungary support the European Commission (EC)’s removal of “yellow card” warning on Vietnamese aquatic products, adding that both sides should work closely together to deal with obstacles in projects that are delayed.

Host and guest promised to reinforce ties across defence-security, education-training, science-technology, water management, agriculture, culture-sports-tourism, and labour.

On regional and global issues of shared concern, they affirmed to continue working closely together at international forums and organisations. They underlined the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and security, including maritime security; settling disputes through peaceful means in line with international law; supporting security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation, and upholding the rule of law in the East Sea, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

On June 9, Hang had a discussion with State Secretary of the Office of the President of Hungary Schanda Tamas, and held a working session with the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary./.

French, Canadian teams compete at Da Nang Fireworks festival

Teams from France and Canada on June 10 evening competed at the ongoing Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF) 2023, conquering thousands of viewers with performances under the theme “ Love without Distance”.

The team Hands Fireworks from Canada participating in the DIIF for the first time brought to the audience a performance called “Aurora”.

As the aurora is known as a natural light display that shimmers in the sky, is only visible at night, and usually only appears in lower polar regions, the French performance overwhelmed thousands of spectators when recreating the beauty of the aurora on Canadian electronic music, through light and colours.

Meanwhile, the team Arteventia from France that is also a newcomer to the DIFF brought a performance called “Colours of Hope”, delivering a message that resilience is the only hope to overcome difficulties and obstacles and help us discover the beauty of life. The performance emphasised the understanding between people and people, and the connection between people and nature.

The Arteventia team has won many big prizes at fireworks competitions in the US, Poland, and Belgium. DIFF 2023, themed ‘The World without Distance,’ takes place from June 2 to July 8 on a stage along the bank of the Han River in the central city of Da Nang.

Seven international pyrotechnic teams from the UK, Italy, Poland, France, Australia, Canada, Finland, and a team from Da Nang join the festival.

East Sea, Vietnam’s sovereignty from perspective of European scholars

A conference themed “East Sea and the Sovereignty of Vietnam” was held in Paris on June 10, attracting the participation of many Vietnamese and foreign scholars.

Vietnamese Ambassador to France Dinh Toan Thang said this event is of great significance for overseas Vietnamese, especially those living in Europe, showing their affection and attachment to their homeland and their concern with major national issues.

Organised under the initiative of the Liaison Board of Overseas Vietnamese in Europe, the conference received 14 speeches from scholars, professors, doctors and researchers on Asia and the East Sea, as well as economists and educators from European countries such as Poland, Germany, France, Italy, the Czech Republic and Ukraine, and Canada, and Vietnam.

The presentations mentioned many points of view on the East Sea and Vietnam’s sovereignty over sea and islands, from the historical, cultural, political and legal perspectives. The situation in the East Sea, solutions to handle disputes, and options for marine economic development were also discussed at the event.

History Professor Patrice Jorland, former president of the France-Vietnam Friendship Association, told Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Paris that Vietnam has sovereignty in the East Sea, and historical evidence shows that the country has asserted sovereignty over Truong Sa and Hoang Sa since the end of the 18th century, under the Nguyen Dynasty.

The French professor also stressed that the parties concerned need to respect international law, and that ASEAN, of which Vietnam is an active member, should strengthen solidarity, promote diplomatic efforts and negotiations, and avoid using force to settle disputes.

Malgorzata Pietrasiak, a professor at the University of Lodz in Poland and an expert on Vietnam, appreciated Vietnam’s method of handling issues at sea, which she called the term “Hedgingowa” (roughly translated as “risk prevention”).

According to her, this is a wise, flexible and peaceful strategy, without tension, but also without concession. She said this method has affirmed the effectiveness of Vietnam’s diplomacy in international politics./.
