Mass shootings occur ‘every single day’ in US: Biden

US President Joe Biden on Friday issued an impassioned plea for greater gun control, saying mass shootings occur “every damn day in America.” Biden pointed to gun violence that occurs beyond the headlines. In “areas that are poor, mostly minority, there’s a mass shooting that never reaches the crescendo that it reaches other places every single day,” he said while addressing the National Safer Communities Summit in the state of Connecticut. Much of the president’s remarks appear to be borne out by data from the Gun Violence Archive, an independent monitor that tracks gun-related violence in the US. It tracked 296 mass shootings so far in nearly half the year. Biden told the gathering of gun control advocates that an uphill battle lies ahead, but vowed to impose an assault rifle ban and end legal protections preventing gun makers from being held liable for crimes committed using their wares. “We will beat the gun industry. We will beat the big money that sits behind them, and the politicians that refuse to stand up and act. It won’t be easy,” he said. “I have no illusions how fiercely they’ll fight back but I also have no illusions about the people in this room. Look at what you’ve already done.” Biden was addressing the summit on the one-year anniversary of his landmark gun control legislation, which incentivized states to adopt what is known as “red flag” laws, which make it easier to take guns out of the hands of individuals deemed to be a risk to themselves or others, and strengthened background checks nationwide. He said the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act already represents “the most meaningful gun safety law in 30 years,” pointing to it as a sign that more can be done. “We did overcome an unrelenting opposition from the gun lobby to gun manufacturers and so many politicians who hide behind the belief that they’ll never have to pay a price for their inaction when they oppose common sense gun legislation, and we beat them,” he said.

Michael Jordan to sell majority share of Charlotte Hornets

Michael Jordan is set to sell the majority share of the Charlotte Hornets, the NBA confirmed on Friday, a move that will end his 13-year run overseeing the basketball team. In a statement, NBA said that Jordan has reached an agreement to sell the majority share of the Charlotte Hornets to a group led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall. “Plotkin, who acquired a minority stake in the Hornets in 2019, has been an alternate governor on the NBA Board of Governors since 2019 and is the founder and chief investment officer of Tallwoods Capital LLC,” the statement said. “Schnall is co-president of Clayton, Dubilier and Rice LLC, where he has worked for 27 years, and has been a significant minority owner of the Atlanta Hawks and an alternate governor on the NBA Board of Governors since 2015. Schnall is in the process of selling his investment in the Hawks, which is expected to be completed in the next several weeks.” Jordan is largely considered to be the greatest player in the history of the game, winning six NBA titles in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and 1998 during his career with the Bulls. He was also a six-time NBA Finals MVP (most valuable player) and 14-time NBA All-Star. The 60-year-old legend retired from basketball in 2003.

NBA All-Star Ja Morant suspended for 25 games

The National Basketball Association (NBA) suspended on Friday Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant for 25 games without pay for brandishing a firearm on social media. “Morant’s suspension begins immediately and will remain in effect through the first 25 games of the 2023-24 regular season,” the NBA said in a statement about the penalty for conduct detrimental to the league. The 23-year-old all-star will also be barred from public league and team activities, including preseason games, throughout his suspension, the statement said, adding that he would need to meet certain conditions before he can return to the court. It is the second time Morant was suspended in the past three months after an eight-game suspension in March. Morant appeared on a friend’s Instagram feed holding what appeared to be a gun last month, prompting the latest investigation by the NBA. He had already been suspended by the Grizzlies from team activities, in anticipation of the NBA sanction. The point guard released a statement after his recent suspension, apologizing for his actions on social media. “I want to apologize to the NBA, the Grizzlies, my teammates, and the city of Memphis. To (NBA Commissioner) Adam Silver, (Grizzlies General Manager) Zach Kleiman, and (Grizzlies owner) Robert Pera – who gave me the opportunity to be a professional athlete and have supported me – I’m sorry for the harm I’ve done.” Morant was named to the All-Star team twice in 2022 and 2023, averaging 26.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 8.1 assists in 61 games this season.
