PAGASA lists 8 areas with dangerous heat index

MANILA: The country will continue to experience warm and humid weather due to the easterlies, the weather bureau said on Sunday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said eight areas in the country will experience a 42°C to 43 °C heat index.

Areas with 42 °C heat index are Dagupan City in Pangasinan, Aparri and Tuguegarao in Cagayan, Dumangas in Iloilo, Zamboanga City, and Cotabato City while Puerto Princesa City and Aborlan in Palawan will experience 43 °C heat index.

Under its heat index classification system, PAGASA said areas with 42 to 51 °C heat index indices are in the ‘danger’ category. It warned that continued exposure may result in heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Meanwhile, the weather bureau said Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to easterlies.

Possible flash floods or landslides are expected during severe thunderstorms.

Northern Lu
zon and the rest of the country will have light to moderate winds and slight to moderate seas.

The temperature in Metro Manila will range from 24°C to 35°C; Baguio City, 17°C to 26°C; Laoag City, 26°C to 33°C; Legazpi City, 25°C to 31°C; Metro Cebu, 27°C to 32°C; and Metro Davao, 26°C to 35°C.

P200-M loan released for ‘Pambansang Pabahay’ projects

MANILA: The Home Development Mutual Fund or Pag-IBIG Fund has released PHP200 million in developmental loans for housing projects under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s flagship Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino (4PH) Program.

The 4PH-Project Management Office (PMO) of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) said the loans were issued to two private contractors currently implementing 4PH projects in Luzon and Visayas.

The contractors received PHP40 million and PHP160 million on April 5 and 8, respectively, according to a news release on Sunday.

During DHSUD’s fifth anniversary on Feb. 14, Pag-IBIG Fund released PHP350 million for the Palayan City Township Project in Nueva Ecija, also under the 4PH Program.

Apart from these, Pag-IBIG Fund previously approved almost PHP13 billion revolving credit lines for the National Housing Authority and the Social Housing Finance Corporation to support their 4PH projects.

DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar said the loans would encourage
private banks to join the 4PH.

“More than the actual value of the loan, it’s the confidence that these releases build on our private partners, especially private contractors/developers that is huge for the success of our Pambansang Pabahay,’ he said.

Pag-IBIG Fund chief Marilene Acosta assured that 4PH proponents can rely on the DHSUD to finance their housing projects under the most secure and affordable terms.

“Pag-IBIG Fund remains capable and ready to provide funding for incoming 4PH proponents through our Direct Developmental Loan Program for the 4PH. More Pambansang Pabahay projects would mean more supply of quality homes at lower-than-market prices,’ Acosta said.

She said Pag-IBIG Fund stands as the single largest source of home financing in the country, but solving the housing backlog requires the participation of all stakeholders.

“We are happy to be able to work with developers, contractors, and fellow government agencies towards our shared commitment to empower Filipino workers in securing dece
nt and affordable homes for their families,” Acosta added.

More than 30 Pambansang Pabahay projects are ongoing throughout the country and currently in various stages of development and construction.

The 4PH-PMO, which is spearheading the nationwide rollout of the flagship program, is headed by Undersecretary Garry De Guzman.

DFA checking for Filipinos aboard Iran-seized vessel

MANILA: The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is checking whether a Filipino national is among the crew members of a vessel seized by Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) near the Strait of Hormuz.

Once confirmed, the DFA vowed to extend all necessary assistance to ensure their release.

‘We are working in coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Tehran and the Department of Migrant Workers to verify the presence of Filipino seafarers on board,’ it said Saturday night.

‘If so, no efforts will be spared to have them released and returned home as possible,’ it added.

The agency emphasized that the welfare of Filipino seafarers and other overseas nationals is an ongoing commitment of the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Iran’s state-run IRNA said a special forces unit of the IRGC carried out a heliborne operation on the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries on Saturday, directing it towards Iran’s territorial.

The vessel is operated by the Zodiac Maritime Shipping Company, which IRNA
identified as partly-owned by Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer.

The Iran media said the incident comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel over the latter’s ‘attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria on April 1’.

The MSC has yet to release the nationalities of the vessel’s 25 crew members.

PBBM lauded for ‘monumental’ diplomatic win in trilateral summit

MANILA: Filipinos must continue supporting the Marcos administration and work hand in hand toward a future of peace, progress and prosperity for the country.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s trilateral meeting with United States President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Washington, D.C. outcome of the trilateral meeting holds immense importance for the Filipino people, the economy and national interest, particularly in the context of the West Philippine Sea (WPS) issues.

“On behalf of the entire House of Representatives, I extend my warmest congratulations to President Marcos for his remarkable achievement in securing a monumental diplomatic victory through the recent historic trilateral meeting with President Biden and Prime Minister Kishida,” House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez said in a statement on Sunday.

As the Philippines navigates the challenges posed by the global pandemic and work towards full economic recovery, such partnerships are instrumental in driving sustaina
ble growth, fostering innovation, and creating employment opportunities for our people, Romualdez added.

He noted that the US and Japan committed to continue their support for Philippine defense modernization priorities and upgrading the capability of the Philippine Coast Guard.

‘In addition, the three leaders will also conduct more combined naval training and exercises not only among the three countries but also with additional partners,’ he said.

Romualdez said aside from improved defense and maritime cooperation, among the major benefits the Philippines would derive from the trilateral summit include the following:

— Launching of the Luzon Economic Corridor, which will support connectivity between Subic Bay, Clark, Manila, and Batangas by accelerating coordinated investments in high-impact infrastructure projects, including rail, ports modernization, clean energy and semiconductor supply chains and deployments, agribusiness, and civilian port upgrades at Subic Bay.

— US and Japan pledge to provide a
t least USD8 million for Open Radio Access Network (RAN) field trials and the Asia Open RAN Academy based in Manila, to enable future commercial deployment and an open, interoperable, secure, reliable, and trusted information communications technology ecosystem in the Philippines.

— Through the CHIPS and Science Act’s International Technology Security and Innovation Fund, the US and the Philippines will coordinate efforts to develop and expand the Philippine semiconductor workforce to strengthen the global supply chain.

— Expanded partnership on safe and secure civil-nuclear capacity building including trilateral cooperation on civilian nuclear workforce development to advance the Philippines’ civil nuclear energy program.

— Expanded trilateral cooperation on the deployment of clean energy technologies, including renewable energy projects such as solar and wind, to support energy requirements in the Philippines and help ensure a just energy transition.

Romualdez said apart from securing these commitmen
ts of cooperation from the US and Japan, President Marcos also held meetings with leading US firms, such as the Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) and Google, as well as top US business leaders and officials of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Romualdez said such engagements, held on the sidelines of the trilateral meeting, manifest President Marcos’ sustained campaign to attract more foreign investments into the country.

Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez estimated that at least USD100 billion in investments from the US and Japan may come to the Philippines in five to 10 years as a result of the historic trilateral summit.
