Tourists come in great numbers to Dien Bien Phu


Hanoi: The special national relic site of Dien Bien Phu Battlefield in the mountainous province of Dien Bien is attracting an increase influx of tourists from across the country and abroad as only half a month ahead of the Grand Celebration on May 7.

Statistics from the Relics Committee has shown that in the first half of April alone, more than 100 thousands of visitors flocked to the site, and the number keeps rising in the following days when the main celebration will take place for the historical victory’s 70th anniversary (May 7, 1954 – 2024).

The tourists often chose to visit destinations such as A1 Hill, Martyrs’ Temple, A1 Cemetery, Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum, and the De Castries Bunker.

Nguyen Van Dien, a veteran tourist from Hanoi’s Tu Liem district, said he joined a group of 40 tourists from the capital city, most of them are veterans and children.

Dien said he chose to visit Dien Bien Phu Battlefield early as this year, its 70th anniversary is a big event and the site will be very
crowded.

His group will stay in Dien Bien for two days and try to visit as many sites as possible particularly the martyrs’ cemeteries, he added.

“This is not only a great opportunity to honour the heroic history of the nation, but also a time to educate younger generations, especially children about the bravery, heroic, indomitable tradition and the resounding victories of forefathers who sacrificed to protect the Fatherland./.

Doha World Cup: Yulo bags gold, Ruivivar books Paris trip

MANILA: The Philippines’ Carlos Yulo scored a gold Saturday at the International Gymnastics Federation’s World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

The 24-year-old Yulo won in the men’s parallel bars final with a score of 15.200, beating Chinese Taipei’s Hung Yuan-Hsi’s 14.966 and Brazilian Caio Souza’s 14.566.

Earlier, he settled for silver in the vault event with a score of 15.066, behind Armenian Artur Davtyan (15.166).

The tournament also gave the Philippines its 10th Paris Olympian and third gymnast in Levi Jung-Ruivivar.

The 17-year-old sealed her slot after a silver medal finish in the uneven bars to join Yulo and Aleah Finnegan to the July 26 to Aug. 11 Summer Games.

The international gymnastics federation said 318 gymnasts will compete for 54 medals in Paris — 192 artistic, 94 rhythmic and 32 trampoline.

LGUs, gov’t agencies ordered to implement anti-hunger programs

MANILA: Malacañang on Sunday issued Memorandum Circular No. 47, directing all government agencies and local government units to support the implementation of the Enhanced Partnership Against Hunger and Poverty (EPAHP) program that will ensure food security and proper nutrition.

The memorandum was signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on April 19.

The EPAHP is one of the banner programs of the Task Force on Zero Hunger, aimed at institutionalizing efforts to mitigate hunger and promote food and nutrition security by linking community-based organizations (CBOs) to prospective markets and providing credit assistance to support food production, processing and distribution.

‘It is imperative for all government agencies and instrumentalities to support the continued and effective implementation of the EPAHP Program to bolster government efforts towards attaining zero hunger, food and nutrition security, and sustainable agriculture,’ the memorandum read.

The Task Force Hunger is tasked to ensure the conti
nued and effective implementation of the EPAHP Program in coordination with relevant government agencies.

The task force is mandated to enhance provision of farm production technologies and extension of services to government-assisted family farms and rural based-organizations, as well as to enhance the sustainability of the EPAHP Program through the implementation of policies that will engage the private sector, and institutionalize mechanisms in LGUs.

It is also directed to adopt community participation procurement to encourage CBOs to participate in the EPAHP program, and construct, repair and improve irrigation facilities and appurtenant structures in irrigable areas in the countryside.

Mt. Ruang eruption damages 498 houses, public facilities

JAKARTA: The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded at least 498 houses and three public facilities were damaged due to the eruption of Mount Ruang in Sitaro Islands District, North Sulawesi.

The head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, on Sunday, said in addition to 135 mildly damaged houses and 363 moderately to severely damaged houses, two churches and one elementary school building in Tagulandang, Sitaro Islands were affected by the eruption.

“This number was obtained based on the results of the recapitulation carried out by the disaster emergency management team on April 20,” Muhari informed.

The BNPB team’s recapitulation data also reported that 11,624 residents of the Sitaro Islands were affected by the eruption that occurred on April 18.

The residents are spread across 12 villages in Tagulandang Sub-district, namely Pumpente, Laingpatehi, Mahangiang, Tulusan Barangka Pehe, Apengsala, Lesah Rende, Pahiama, Boto, Leseh, Bahoi, and Balehumara.

PB confirmed that the majority of the affected residents had been evacuated to emergency posts, places of worship, and the homes of their relatives.

As many as 31 Leseh residents who were patients at the Tagulandang Regional General Hospital (RSUD) in Batuline, Sitaro Islands were evacuated to Bethel Paninteang Church.

BNPB has also started sending aid, consisting of five refugee tents, 100 family tents, four lighting towers, four diesel generators, 300 packages of basic necessities, 300 packages of ready-to-eat food, 300 packages of antibacterial equipment, 300 mattresses, 300 blankets, 150 rolled beds, 300 boxes of masks, 50 velbeds, 10 packages of portable toilets, and 300 packages of refugee survival kits to meet the basic needs of residents affected by the eruption.

Man sets self ablaze outside Trump trial courthouse, dies

NEW YORK: The man who set himself on fire near the Manhattan courthouse where former president Donald Trump was standing trial succumbed to his injuries and died.

Max Azzarello, 37, was rushed to the hospital after self-immolating outside the Manhattan courthouse where Trump is on trial.

Despite being intubated, he could not be saved, according to a report by NBC News.

Video posted on social media showed the man’s body engulfed in flames in Collect Pond Park across the street from the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse.

He then collapsed to the ground.

New York police said that Azzarello, just hours before he set himself on fire, left a message online warning of an approaching ‘fascist world coup.’
