Marcos believes Filipino hospitality drives PH tourism

MANILA: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Sunday urged Filipinos to continue exemplifying their genuine warmth and hospitality to visitors to help propel growth and overall economic development.

In his latest vlog, Marcos recounted how foreign dignitaries would usually ask him why Filipinos are so nice as hosts.

He said Filipinos’ genuine warmth is innately embedded in the social fabric of being a Filipino, making it one of the tourism brands the country can be proud of.

‘Ang Filipino hospitality ay katangian na noon pa man ng bawat Pilipino. Isabuhay pa natin ito, lalo pang paghusayan, ito ang mahahalagang sangkap sa ating biyahe tungo sa Bagong Pilipinas (The Filipino hospitality is a trait that we have been known for. Let us put it into practice, improve on it, as it is an important component of our journey towards a New Philippines),’ Marcos said.

In his five-minute vlog, the President talked about how Filipino hospitality was on full display whenever a world leader was visiting the country.

He sa
id that like how other countries welcomed him in his foreign trips with their ‘best foot forward,’ the Philippines would pull out all the stops to entertain visitors.

Marcos highlighted the importance of offering visitors the convenience of proximity to the place where they will temporarily stay in the Philippines to ensure that they will make it on time for their scheduled meetings.

This, according to the President, gave birth to the initiative of renovating old buildings in the Malacañang compound to turn them into temporary lodging for visiting dignitaries.

‘Imbis na maghohotel pa sila sa malayo, matatraffic, at mahihirapan sa schedule ng mga meeting, dito na lang sila sa Palasyo. Nagkataon na may mga napabayaang lumang bahay sa compound ng Malacañang at may nakita kaming isa na puwede pang i-renovate, ‘yun ang aming ginawa (Instead of staying in hotel, getting stuck in traffic, and experience difficulty with their scheduled meetings, they will be here at the Palace. Fortunately, there were neglected ol
d houses in the Malacañang compound and we found one that could be renovated, that’s what we did),’ he said.

These establishments include the Goldenberg and Laperal mansions.

The President said the project was made possible through the collaboration of the teams of the Office of the President, the Social Secretary and the Office of the First Lady.

All of these, the President said he felt proud of whenever foreign leaders asked him what makes the Philippines and its people graciously unique, stressing that world leaders must know that they are important to Filipinos to pave the way for stronger and deeper ties.

‘It is important that our guests feel very welcome here. In order to make our collaboration stronger, our agreements, our partnerships in different countries,’ he added.

Last week, Marcos hosted New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in Malacañang where they tackled various collaboration points such as defense, maritime security, economic development, and people-to-people exchanges.

The Amir
of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, will also be at Malacañang on Monday upon the invitation of Marcos.

BOI reaches almost 50% of 2023 pledges in 2024 Q1

MANILA: The Board of Investments (BOI) registered PHP607.22 billion worth of projects from January to April 17 this year.

BOI Director Sandra Marie Recolizado said it is almost half of the registered projects for the full year of 2023, valued at PHP1.26 trillion.

She told the media on Friday that the approved investments during the past four months was 15 percent higher than the PHP527.24 billion posted during the same period last year.

The recent investment approvals were also equivalent to 40 percent of the higher end of BOI’s target registration for this year at PHP1.5 trillion.

Recolizado said the investment commitments in nearly four months came from 117 projects, mostly from local sources.

Eighty-one percent of the investment pledges came from Filipino sources, with total latest BOI approvals amounting to PHP494.37 billion.

‘Let’s not underestimate domestic investments because that’s why we really encourage our domestic investors to commit their capital to projects in the Philippines rather than b
ringing out their money, their capital outside the Philippines,’ Trade Secretary and BOI chair Alfredo Pascual said.

Meanwhile, Recolizado mentioned two big-ticket investments from year-to-date, which are all renewable energy projects.

The top approved investment for the period is the PHP297-billion Pakil Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant in Laguna province of Ahunan Power, Inc., a 100-percent Filipino enterprise.

The project is expected to produce 1,400 megawatts of clean and renewable energy for the growing electricity needs of the country.

The second highest BOI-approved investment for the period is Ivisan Windkraft Corp.’s 450-MW Frontera Bay Wind Power Project in Cavite province, a 75-25 Singaporean-Filipino investment.

PH welcomes G7 position vs. ‘baseless’ China claims in SCS

MANILA: The Philippines expressed appreciation for the Group of Seven’s (G7) rejection of China’s ‘baseless and expansive’ claims in the South China Sea (SCS), as well as its dangerous maneuvers against Filipino vessels within Manila’s maritime territory.

In a statement Sunday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) welcomed G7’s commitment to the rule of law and the rules-based maritime order anchored on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), as well as its commitment to sustainable and inclusive economic development in the Indo-Pacific.

G7 is composed of Canada, France, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, and represents the world’s leading industrialized democracies.

The Philippines, according to the DFA, is firmly committed to UNCLOS and the binding Arbitral Award of 2016, adding that respect and adherence to international law and freedom of navigation are essential to ensuring global prosperity, peace and stability.

‘As such, we appreciate the
G7’s support in rejecting China’s baseless and expansive claims, and their call for China to cease its illegal activities, particularly its use of coast guard and maritime militia in the South China Sea that engage in dangerous maneuvers and the use of water cannons against Philippine vessels,’ the DFA said.

‘We duly note and appreciate the G7’s reaffirmation that the 2016 Arbitral Award is a significant milestone and a useful basis for the peaceful management and resolution of differences at sea,’ it added.

On Friday, G7 issued a communiqué opposing China’s ‘dangerous use’ of coast guard and maritime militia in asserting its claim over the SCS.

On March 5, a China Coast Guard vessel, backed by a Chinese militia ship, water-cannoned a Philippine supply vessel en route to Ayungin Shoal.

The attack, one of several, caused heavy damage to the supply ship and injuries to Filipino crew members. It drew widespread condemnation from different governments.

The DFA added that the Philippines shares G7’s ‘vision o
f a stable and secure Indo-Pacific region, and stands firm against any actions that undermine international security and stability.’

‘We want to see a South China Sea of peace, stability and prosperity, and the cessation of interference, obstruction and harassment of the Philippines’ legal activities within our recognized maritime entitlements,’ it added.

China asserts ownership of virtually the entire waterway, including maritime features within the West Philippine Sea, a claim that was debunked in 2016 by the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

Likewise, the DFA expressed the Philippines’ openness to cooperate with G7 to fulfill its economic initiatives for the region.

‘We stand ready to cooperate with the G7 in its efforts to support economic growth in the Philippines and the Indo-Pacific,’ it said.
