EcoOil-La Salle sets PBA D-League record in win vs. AMA

EcoOil-La Salle tallied the most lopsided win ever in the PBA D-League after blasting AMA by 83 points, 126-43, on Thursday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. The Green Archers set the tone early on by racing to a 42-10 lead against the Titan at the end of the first quarter. EcoOil-La Salle sealed the record-setting win by holding AMA to just two points in the fourth quarter. Assistant coach Gian Nazario, though, said eclipsing the previous record winning margin of 76 set by the Tanduay Rhum Masters against the Zark’s Jawbreakers in 2017 was not on the Green Archers’ mind. “Well, hindi naman namin iniisip ‘yung (we were not thinking about the) record. It’s good that we eclipsed it but we just focused on getting better. It’s an opportunity for us to get better and we talked about it before the game na ‘wag naming pipiliin ‘yung kalaban namin (we should not pick our opponents),” Nazario said. Ben Phillips and Raven Cortez each scored 19 points to power EcoOil-La Salle, which tied Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda for first place in the team standings at 4-1. Earl Ceniza and Reed Baclig scored 10 each for AMA, which wound up their campaign with a 0-6 record. In the first game, Centro Escolar University (CEU) survived two overtimes to edge Philippine Sports Performance (PSP), 109-107. Ron Tolentino won it for the Scorpions after scoring the game-winning three with 18 seconds left in the second extension as they frustrated the Gymers, who failed to close them out in regulation. “Wala na ‘yung Xs and Os dito eh (There is no more Xs and Os here). It’s all about heart. And hats off to our players for not giving up. Hindi sila sumuko (They didn’t give up) against a veteran team like PSP,” said CEU coach Jeff Perlas, whose team could get a shot at stealing an outright semifinal spot if they beat Marinerong Pilipino-San Beda next Thursday. Franz Ray Diaz scattered 21 points with five rebounds and seven assists to show the way for the Scorpions while Tolentino finished with 20-points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Mark Meneses collared 22 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, three steals and six blocks while Wendell Comboy had 19 for the Gymers, who slid to 2-4 but is assured of a quarterfinals spot.

Kaya-Iloilo wins 1st PH Football League title

Kaya-Iloilo clinched the Philippines Football League (PFL) championship without the need to grind for it after Stallion Laguna shut the door on Dynamic Herb Cebu’s last dash to the title with a goalless draw in their final season meeting on Wednesday at the Dynamic Herb Sports Complex in Talisay City. Patrick Deyto played the Grinch for Cebu as he kept a clean sheet for Stallion Laguna with fantastic saves even as Papu Corsame blew Cebu’s best chance to save their title chase, a close-range shot from the right side of the goal that badly sailed off-target. Cebu sent the ball into the goal late into the contest, but the goal was disallowed after the officiating crew ruled it as offside, riling up head coach Memhet Kakil, who confronted the head referee afterward. The referee threw Kakil out of the playing field, capping a frustrating afternoon for Cebu, which failed to capitalize on Stallion Laguna going down to nine men due to red cards and even finished the match with only 10 booters due to a red card as well. Despite ending its season with a 21-match unbeaten streak, Cebu will finish with only 51 points, one short of Kaya-Iloilo, which only has its Saturday night match against Stallion Laguna at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila as its game to spare. A Cebu win could have prompted Kaya Iloilo to at least play Stallion Laguna to a draw or even win to clinch the title. Stallion Laguna, on the other hand, is now up to 32 points after 20 matches. Kaya-Iloilo became the second different club to win it all in the PFL after the Ceres-Negros/United Clark franchise ruled the first four full seasons of the league. Dating back to the days of the old United Football League, Kaya-Iloilo has now won four top-division titles

Meralco won in Luigi Trillo’s first game as its official head coach with a 97-89 win against NorthPort in their PBA on Tour game on Wednesday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. The Bolts stormed back in the fourth quarter, dropping 33 points on the Batang Pier after they began the second half with a huge third quarter that actually put them ahead. Allein Maliksi led Meralco with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while Bong Quinto added 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists. In the second game, Phoenix regained its dominant form just in time as they withstood San Miguel’s late challenge with a 106-101 win. The Fuel Masters failed to sustain a hot start as the Beermen recovered after conceding 37 first-quarter points and even held a 101-98 lead with 2:20 left in the fourth. However, a split from Chris Lalata sparked Phoenix’s game-deciding 8-0 run as Tyler Tio converted the go-ahead three with 47 seconds left and Raul Soyud hit a crucial layup 21 seconds later. To put some more icing on the cake, Daniel Atienza, a recruit for the preseason, made two more free throws for the final tally. Simon Camacho led the Fuel Masters’ balanced attack that saw eight players scoring in double-figures with 15 points, eight rebounds, and one block off the bench. Tio added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal, RR Garcia and Larry Muyang each chipped in 11 markers with Muyang also grabbing 12 rebounds, and Soyud, Sean Manganti, and Kurt Lojera each put up 10 points with Soyud adding 10 boards for his own double-double. Terrence Romeo erupted for 27 points with five rebounds, and seven assists in his first full game in almost two years to lead SMB. Robbie Herndon added 21 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Jericho Cruz and Rodney Brondial each contributed 12 markers with Brondial also grabbing 10 caroms.

Otico, Milliam gain Metro Manila Open q’final berths

– Playing at the center court of the Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) indoor shell court made John Bryan Otico very nostalgic. He recently graduated with a business management degree from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. “It’s exciting to be back here after 4 years. This is also the last shell court that I played on,” said the 23-year-old native of Maramag, Bukidnon. On Wednesday, Otico secured a quarterfinal berth in the men’s singles of the Metro Manila Open tennis tournament after his opponent, No. 7 seed Jed Olivarez, retired in the second set due to fatigue. The score was 6-2, 4-1. He will meet the winner between No. 13 seed Ronard Joven and Vince Tugade. “I’m confident with my game. Whoever I meet, I’ll just fight,” said Otico after the match. He was given a wild card entry and is seeded No. 9 in the tournament offering PHP300,000 in cash to the champion. In 2017, Otico defeated two-time SEA Games gold medalist Patrick John Tierro in the final to become the youngest PCA Open champion at 18. He was No. 2 behind Jeson Patrombon in Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) rankings when he left for the US in August 2019. In the women’s singles category, No. 2 seed Alexa Joy Milliam downed Danna Mariela Abad, 6-2, 6-4, to reach the Final Eight. The 17-year-old netter from La Carlota, Negros Occidental will battle Mikaela Vicencio, a 6-2, 6-1 winner over qualifier Kaye Laurice Mustaza, for a place in the semifinal round. “I’ll just do my best every match and hopefully, I can make it to the final,” said Milliam, who is eyeing her second women’s title after the Rina Cañiza Open held at the PCA outdoor court last February. National players Marian Capadocia and Kim Iglupas also marched to the quarterfinal round of the event sponsored by Sulu Vice Governor Toto Tan, Marawi City Mayor Majul Usman Gadamra, East-West Customs Brokerage Corp., San Jose Salt, Gimaca Realty Corp. and Legalas Trading Corp. Seven-time PCA Open champion Capadocia will take on National University (NU) player Elizabeth Abarquez, who scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nina Alcala. Iglupas, a University of Arizona graduate, ousted No. 3 seed Alexie Santos, 6-3, 6-2, to arrange a quarterfinal showdown with US-based Makeilah Nepomuceno, who prevailed over Anika Diwa, 6-4, 6-0. No. 4 seed Kaye Anne Emana likewise advanced following her 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 win over Tiffany Nocos. She will face wild card Jesselle Marie Ante, who stunned No. 7 seed Althea Faye Ong, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. (
