Antique learners showcase emergency response skills

Learners from various schools in Antique’s capital town will showcase their emergency response skills and knowledge in the three-day Junior Rescue Olympics and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Knowledge Quiz Bee in celebration of the National Children’s Month held at the Robinsons Place.

San Jose de Buenavista Municipal DRRM officer Fe Corazon Tacogdoy said in an interview Tuesday that six public and private high schools are participating in the Rescue Olympics for the Junior and Senior High School categories and 27 for the elementary category.

Day one of the rescue Olympics on Tuesday gathered participants for the junior and senior high school categories.

‘Learners performed bandaging, splinting, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and indoor accident extrication,’ Tacogdoy said.

They also showed their endurance and skills in firefighting by performing bucket relay, hose laying, and busted hose replacement.

The second day will be for the elementary category.

Before joining the contests, all pa
rticipants attended the training conducted by the municipal DRRM office and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) as part of emergency responders in their school and as members of the high school Red Cross organization.

Their trainers served as judges to determine their efficiency and effectiveness in responding to emergencies within their school premises.

‘The learners having been trained could now respond to simple emergencies,’ Tacogdoy said, adding that the Rescue Olympics has been going on for three years.

The quiz bee will be on Nov. 23 before the awarding of the winners and closing ceremony.

Winning schools will receive various emergency equipment such as a foldable emergency stretcher, handheld radio, first aid kit, and blood pressure apparatus for emergency response.
