Magnitude 6.7 earthquake jolts Davao Occidental

MANILA: A magnitude 6.7 earthquake jolted Davao Occidental at 5:48 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tectonic quake struck 368 kilometers of Balut Island. It was 10 kilometers deep.

There were no reported intensities on Phivolcs’ earthquake bulletin.

The following instrumental intensities, however, were logged:

Intensity II – Malungon, Sarangani

Intensity I – Alabel, Glan and Kiamba, Sarangani; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; City of Digos, Davao del Sur

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake.

Instrumental intensity, on the other hand, is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Aftershocks are possible, but Phivolcs said it is not expecting damage from the magnitude 6.7 earthquake.
